Child trafficking can begin something like this: a stranger visits a village and offers housing and a good-paying job in the city. In an effort to support his or her family, the child leaves and promises to send money home. Almost all trafficked children are forced into hard labor and prostitution.
Around the world, as many as 1.2 million children are trafficked every year. In Mexico, more than 16,000 children are working in the sex trade, most of them concentrated around tourist destinations. In Southeast Asia, at least 30 percent of sex trade workers are between the ages of 12 and 17.
This is not an isolated issue and it cannot go ignored any longer. Our children are our future, and they should be protected and nurtured instead of bought and sold. Tell the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, to stand up for our future and end child trafficking.
