Im first of all making a proper planted tank. Im going to get 5 corydoras sterbai and 5 female bettas (also known as Siamese Fighting fish).

The catfish: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/callicht/corydora/316_f.php

Female betta:

The bettas come in lots of colours, red, blue, yellow, black, spotted etc. They're very territorial and the males can't be kept together. They just kill one another. The females can be kept together IF you introduce them to the tank all at the same time and it's large enough for them territorial wise and with lots of plants and hiding places. Still it's abit risky and can go wrong. Im willing to take the chance though, they're very nice fish.

Hey you should maybe get a male betta. They're great fish to keep. Don't need big tanks or filters and they like being alone. Very pretty and colourful and full of character as well. (Bettas are predators so they're abit smarter than some of the more sheep like fish).

They sound pretty good, that is a big problem I have with goldfish - sure they're low maintenance, but they're not very *exciting*. If I could get hold of something brightly coloured that doesn't need too much maintenance that'd be perfect. They still need warm water though?

Actually goldfish aren't low maintenance. They're very hard to take care of properly. Although rewarding if you do. They can get up to 24 year old for example. Most goldfish that people keep never even reach sexual maturity (it takes them around 2-3 years to hit that).

The fishstore I like, it's halfway down Leith walk, has special deals on male bettas. It's a male betta with a bowl/tank and a plant and sand for the bottom for 12 pounds. 14 pounds if you want a crowntail betta (they have like serrated edges on their fins).

If you have a bowl like that you can't really heat it, it's too small. However bettas do like to have their water warm so just keeping it not near a window and perferably heating your room should be enough. There are tricks that can be done to heat them up in the coldest bits of the winter (hot water bottles next to the bowl with a towel wrapped around etc.) but usually just heating up the room is alot easier.

Google search for what the males can look like: http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2003-41,GGLD:en&q=betta

They are carnivores and need to be fed a bit differently from normal tropical fish. Some of them don't eat flaked food (although alot of them do) so you might need to get freeze dried bloodworms (or for a special treat, frozen blood worms that you thaw, really icky actually but the fish LOVE them)

To take care of their small tanks you basically need to take the fish out and empty out all the water and scrub everything once a week. Because there's no filter it's completely silent and doesn't take up much desk space.

Goldfish should NEVER be kept in 'goldfish' bowls, but bettas do well in them. Anyway the fish store on Leith walk has very pretty nice oval tanks that are just perfect for bettas and sell them in a kit like I mentioned. I almost got one myself. The fish are so pretty and so are those tanks. (Even though I was there to buy a big tank).
