When I first came to the United States, I was blessed with the most perfect town (for me) to live.
America came as a big surprise for me. I did NOT know what to expect, but still - I was astonished at how different it was from... whatever image there was in my head. Even thought I thought there was no image :).
Food (as a number one need) was raising quite a few issues. I'm not going into detail with all the mexican food there, it's specific to the area. I'll just say I didn't look forward to any team lonches or company sponsored events where they absolutely served chili, corn chips, salsa, all all other stuff. I could not eat that.
There was a very kind woman at work who always made something really hot at home and brought to work to feed us poor grey skinny latvian kids. Her favorite I think was ... hm... what do you call stuffed corn leaves? Meat inside, corn meal in the middle, and it's all wrapped in the corn leaf and sauteed in a very hot sauce :). It smelled unbelievably good, but the second you put that thing into your mouth... you stop sensing any taste :D. It just burns non-stop for a long time.
And then the whole thing with doughnuts and bagels and... cinnamon rolls?! Yikes. How could people put cinnamon in apple pies!!!
So I used to hit AYCE's and other places where they served more or less home made stuff - mashed potatos, rice, all kinds of meat - nothing spicy.
Hahah, potato salad - I still can't put it in my mouth. It's just too... foreign?
Etc.
And now...
I love all these things. I still can't understand the doughnut thing - it's just so bad!! Even though it's good tasting. But mexican, cinnamon and bagels are some of my favorite meals.
Oh and sushi! First time I tried sushi was in some upscale place in Albuquerque. My friends took me there quite proudly when they found out that I never tasted it. I drank plum wine the whole night and didn't touch a thing after one of them took a salmon sushi, dipped it into soy sauce generously enriched with wasabi - eeeeeeeeeeeeeewwww!!! I could not spit it out, and I couldn't hide my reaction - it was just so disgusting!
I love sushi now. All kinds. Always have hard time choosing and leave with at least three rolls in me, because I just want all of it.
What are your experiences with food preference changes??
