Title: Getting to Know All About You
Characters: Urbanus, Nexus, Vilda
Word Count: ~900
Summary: Urbanus' first appearance.
Notes: This is a really old RP with
ratzeo that I found on my flash drive. I'm not sure why I never posted it. It was more or less complete when I found it, so I just cleaned it up a bit for posting.

Nexus closed the door behind itself, hoping that the envoys in the Great Hall didn't mind that it had suddenly exited from their conversation. If they did, it would apologize later. For now, it turned its attention to Vilda and the newborn nexi.

Vilda was facing the doorway and noticed Nexus first. She waved.

The new nexi turned to face Nexus. Its body, made up of wood and iron, displayed similarities with many of the other nexi, with the exception of its eyes - they looked like they were pieces of the stained glass windows from the Great Hall. Those eyes were wide with the open curiosity that Nexus vaguely remembered from the first few minutes of its own life.

Then the nexi's gaze settled on Nexus, and the expression on its whole face shifted, seeming to open up.

"Hello," Nexus said, waving. "I'm - "

"I know," the nexi said, stepping forward and reaching a hand up to Nexus' face. "You're The Nexus." Its tone was more than just polite; it was almost reverent.

"Nexus," Nexus blurted, blocking the hand awkwardly and turning it into a warriors' clasp. A greeting of equals. "I'm just Nexus."

"Her name is Urbanus," Vilda supplied helpfully.

"Hi, Urbanus," Nexus said. "So you've picked one of the genders."

"Yes. I'm female."

"Neat. I'm not."

"I know."

"Right." The newborn nexi knew all about Nexus, so there wasn't much point in it sharing information about itself. "So," it tried again, "how do you feel?"

"Alive. At the center of things."

"Hm. What things? Everything?"

She paused, tilting her head at Nexus as if the answer was obvious. "... Yes. Ironbloom is at the center of everything, and I'm at the center of Ironbloom."

Nexus pondered that statement, as well as Urbanus' colorful gaze. "Well, I guess a lot of nations are focused on Ironbloom right now for the summit. I think some people might disagree with you, though. What does it mean to be at the center of Ironbloom? Do you mean being in the Great Hall, or are you using a metaphor?"

There was a long silence.

"I don't know what the summit is. Or a metaphor."

"That's okay, I didn't know what a metaphor was until I was a couple of years old, and you're still a few minutes." Nexus decided to try another topic. "So you do know what Ironbloom is? What other things do you know?"

"Ironbloom is the city. And I know all about it."

"You imprinted off Ironbloom?" Vilda interjected, leaning forward with that look of scientific discovery Nexus had seen countless times before - recognizable even on her new face.

"I am Ironbloom as the Land is the Land."

"Just like Thut is the swamp," Vilda translated, catching on faster than Nexus.

"Oh. Do you want to go meet him? It's less crowded in the swamp, too, if you want to go somewhere quieter." Nexus remembered how shy Graven was at first, and how he didn't seem to like people staring at him.

But Urbanus didn't seem uncomfortable until Nexus made the suggestion; then her posture became closed and she suddenly looked defensive. "Outside of the city? No. No."

Nexus raised its hands to dismiss the notion. "Sorry, I forgot. Thut doesn't like leaving the Land. What would you like to do? Do you want to go anywhere, or stay in the Great Hall?"

"I would like to see the people who live here."

Nexus looked at the door it had entered from, behind which stood several people from other parts of Faerun. "A lot of the people who are here right now are visitors, because of the summit - it's a gathering of people from other cities and nations because of Garagos, who is someone who threatens us. But we could probably find the nexi who live here, and Dorgo and Fourth, the mayors of the city. Of ... you?" it offered.

"Perhaps I should talk to the caretakers. That makes sense. You do not have to take me; I know where they are."

"That's impressive." The new nexi seemed to be born with all sorts of powers. "Well, I hope I will see you later today. I would like to talk to you again."

"I will be here ... And I suspect that I will know where to find you, as well. You are the focus of many thoughts in this city."

"I guess so. Well, bye, Urbanus." Nexus lifted a hand and waved as the newborn nexi left the room, like a parent seeing off a child on her first day of school. She moved confidently, excusing herself as she walked past the staring group of humans without a moment's hesitation.

As Urbanus exited the Great Hall, Nexus turned to Vilda. "Urbanus wasn't born because you and I had sex, was it?"

Vilda looked up from where she was scribbling in a notebook - Nexus hadn't even seen her get it out - and shook her head, a grin in her voice. "Nah. Our biology isn't that weird. Not unless Gond was playing a joke on us." She tilted her head for one instant, considering the idea, and then discarded it in the next instant. "I don't think he has that kind of sense of humor."
