Yay! Fangirl insider... stuff.

Okay. So! Fooooor those who didn't know (which would probably be most of everyone who's ever followed me on lj XD) I am on a Hetalia binge. A bad one. Going total fangirl over here (except... without the stupidity)(I hope).

So. My OTP is Denmark-Sweden because, well, hate sex, yeah? XD (remember folks, fangirl) but recently, Russia has seriously been sneaking into it. DenmarkxRussia, that is, not with Sweden. DX So, right, I knew Denmark and Russia had a pretty good relationship in the past and I set out to research it (to write fic) and I found the treaty from 1493 that started it all. And since I will be referencing said treaty (and since it sounds something like a fangirl fantasy come to life), I shall translate it. And make more people see how this ship rocks.

In the name of the Holy Trinity.

We Hans, by God's mercy king of Denmark, Norway, the Vends and the Goths, duke of Schleswig and Holstein, duke of Stormarn and Ditmarsken, count of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst, concludes friendship and eternal alliance with the very distinguished and mighty lord, Ivan, overlord of all of Russia, grand duke of Wolmar, Moscow, Novgorod, Pleskov, Otpheria, Hungary, Vetkia, Perm, Bulgaria, etc., Our dearest brother and ally; We will be one with him in brotherhood, friendship and alliance by this Our present letter, so that We will be of help to him as far as We are able, when he needs help against his enemies and foes, and he will be of help to Us according to ability, when We need help against Our enemies and foes, and We will be one with Our brother against his foe and enemy, Sten Sture, the ruler of the Swedish realm. And when one of us shall initiate strife with Sten Sture, then we will first mutually inform to each other, and We will be of help to Our friend, as far as we are able, in truth and no deceit, and he will be of help to us, in truth and no deceit, as far as he is able, against Sten Sture, so that We may regain and keep the Swedish realm.

We will be one with Our brother against his enemy and foe, the grand duke of Lithuania, as far as We are able, in truth and no deceit.

And where our realms touch each other, shall the division be as it has been from the old days. And fishing, hunting and other use, which is in these waters and lands, and which from old days has belonged to Our realm shall fall to Us and Our people free and without hindrance from Our brother or his people. And fishing, hunting and other use, which is in the lands and waters and which from old days have belonged to his realm, shall fall to him and his people withouthindrance from Us or Our people.

And that, which until this accord has been committed between our two realms and our subjects through robbery, plundering and disputes, shall from here on not be talked of and not held in memory. And that which later happens between our subjects from one side or the other, shall be subject to sentence and treatment without long delays. And likewise Our brother, his officials and attorneys shall, according to their custom, support and treat Our men like their own, in truth and no deceit. And We and Our officials and attorneys shall support and treat his men according to Our custom in the same way We treat Our own, in truth and no deceit.

And our messengers and ambassadors shall in his realm have free passage on and and at sea with no hindrance. And his ambassadors and messengers shall in Our realm have free passage on land and at sea with no hindrance.

Grocers and merchants and other tradesmen from both realms shall in both realms be able to travel from one to the other at water and on land, able to ride around and freely arrange their business without fear and disturbance, after the usual customs duties has been paid in accordance to the country's practice, and we should from both sides support and serve them in truth and no deceit.

And if some of Our people, lead by the wind, by coincidence enter or come to his realm, or some of his people in Ours, then shall We or him, Our or his officials and attorneys on both sides not in any way hold back their goods or products, but we ought to assist them without remuneration or hindrance and should they be set to pay, they shall pay the usual according to the country's customs.

Slaves, debtors and summoned, runaway servants, robbers and other miscreants, which comes from one realm to the other shall from both sides be sent home in haste. On and by this We, Hans, by God's mercy king of Denmark, Norway, the Vends, and the Goths, chosen as king of Sweden, duke os Schleswig andd Holstein, duke of Stormarn and Ditmarsken, count of Oldenburg and Delmenhorst, has kissed the cross for Our dear brother, Lord Ivan, overlord of all of Russia, grand duke of Wolmar, Moscow, Novgorod, Pleskov, Otpheria, Hungary, Vetkia, Perm, Bulgaria etc. for preservation of friendship and truth by our present and open letter, as We by this Our powerful letter hang Our seal.

Given on Our Copenhagen castle in the 1493rd year of the divine incarnation, on the 8th of November.

Notes:
The original was written in Latin, but alas, I don't know Latin. So this has been translated twice (Latin to Danish, Danish to English). I apologize for possible... lacks this will inevitable cause.

Sten Sture was a Swede who had taken control of Sweden after the death of the previous king, Christian I, and refused to hand over the royal power to King Hans even though he had been appointed to take over the Swedish crown as well (by the Swedish national assembly no less). Though Sten Sture never claimed the crown himself (because even he knew that would get him in severe trouble) but, yeah, refused to crown Hans. Bad Swede.

Kissing the cross was (is?) a Russian tradition when sealing a deal. It probably happened in front of the Russian emissaries.

This whole deal happened because, well, Sten Sture was being a spoilsport. The reason Russia agreed would be because the Swedish settlers in Finland were encroaching on Russian land and Ivan III wanted them to stop Swedefying his country (lawl, irony XD).

Denmark never actually managed to assist Ivan against Lithuania, since Ivan managed to deal with that already, uh, in 1495? I think?

The Russian answer has not been preserved, but supposedly, it should be much the same wording, except, you know, turned around. Reciprocation was traditional at the time.

Denmark and Russia did manage to conquer Sweden and Hans was crowned king of Sweden in 1497. But then Russia began getting bitchy. You will note the very, very loosely worded treaty up there in regards to borders. Since Hans was now king of Sweden, that meant that he did have a border to Russia (aka the now Russian-Finnish border), but “from old days” is... very imprecise. King Hans thought it meant the border agreed upon in 1323 (Nöteburg treaty) whereas Ivan claimed it was even further back (aka pretty much back from where a border wasn't a problem). Hans, now actually interested in this point, disagreed strongly. Blah, blah, back and forth. Then Russia sent an emissary to Hans while he was holding court in Stockholm in 1501 (fucking Russians XD), who very loudly proclaimed that according to the treaty, where Hans had agreed to wage war against Sweden (a lie, obviously, it was against Sten Sture) the deal said that he had agreed that those lands were Russian, blah blah.

...For some reason, the Swedish nobles and officials and people didn't much like that (They even got a hold of a copy of the treaty and was still angry) and Sweden revolted. ...Under Sten Sture. Why had that
guy not been hanged already?! -_-;

Anyways, King Hans never got Sweden back, though Christian II (his son) did and that's where you got the Stockholm Bloodbath and, you know, good stuff. The rest is history.
