I just completed my last night hike for camp, and it was such a good note to go out on. I had this amazing conversation with one of the kids about how violent South Central (his neighborhood) can be, about how the LAPD engages in profiling and harassing people based on how they look or dress, how it's the system that's messed up not the individual, and how some cops genuinely want to help people while other abuse their power. We talked about what it meant to be a soldier, whether you're protecting people or if it's just violence. We talked about the benefits of being a scientist. We talked about a very sad Mexican TV show. It was just such an amazing and honest conversation to be having with an eleven year old. Then, to top it off, we saw three deer in a row run through the bushes, across the path, and then leap over a fence. It was incrediable.
But I feel increasingly ready to be a teacher.
