DragonCon and ZebraCon

I was shocked to see how long it has been since I posted. I have updated my other lj more often, but that one is linked to my SCA activities and I am trying to keep these separate until I'm no longer an officer.

Went to DragonCon and had a blast. There is so much going on that I never make to everything I want to. This year was split between hanging with Iolausians (fans of Iolaus from Hercules) and dealing with my daughter. She wants to enter the Dawn look-alike contest next year, and since I am the costumer, I went with her to several panels for research. She has come up with an idea which I think will go over very well. Turns out that if you *win* the contest, then the next year you are a judge, then you can never enter again. So her goal is to take 2nd place. I wanted to get to a lot of the Star Gate panels, but life conspired against me. Rats. And a bunch of fans that I know where hanging out there. I guess it's better luck next time. We did get to the MythBusters panel - the poor guys were toasted - they had flown in without sleep or food, and the last myth they were working on was if brushing your teeth after eating hot peppers would kill it heat. It doesn't. And that was the last they ate. Yuck! They did very well despite the exhaustion. Then on the way home, I realized I had caught the con cold - the press of 30,000 fans can spread one of these at light speed.

Next up is ZebraCon. I have collected a roommate, which is good as we spent way too much money at DC. I'm looking forward to this a lot - a nice little con where I can really meet other fen.

Then to round out the financial hemorrhage, we are going to New Zealand to bring the son back from his semester abroad. They just finished spring break down there, and he spent it snowboarding down Mt. Doom. There was a lot of envy going on. We'll be spending 2 weeks as the promised family vacation abroad. Then we get to tighten our belts big time to recover. The memories will be worth it. Right now, I rooting for the exchange rate to improve - that would save a bunch too.

On the SCA front, our barony is having difficulties which we are trying to address. I don't need this much Drahma in my life, but I knew this was part of the job. It's hard being the adult. We dropped an email bomb and I hope we get positive results. Time will tell.
