It's better than USB 2.0, but it's twitchy, and Apple doesn't put a separate FW channel/bus behind each of its FW connectors, as they do with USB. That's a crime.

firewire has better long term throughput but usb has better for burstable speeds. i believe the theory is that usb, while it is rated at a faster speed it has to negotiate everything so there's high overhead whereas firewire there really isn't.
