I still love Hong Kong, at least, as a visitor.
I kicked around there for a week. I stayed in the Sheraton in Kowloon: good room, OK view on harbor side (would have preferred being on a higher floor), but the food was not as good as can be found elsewhere (even within a block or two).
Starwood badly needs a better hotel in that city.
This time, the weather was nice, and I got a look at the view from
Victoria Peak (well, top of the tram, if not the peak itself). The pictures do not do it justice.
I used the
MTR extensively with an
Octopus card, and I think it works extremely well.
My brother was there on business (my excuse to be there so we could knock around together), but when he wasn't busy, we hit a number of the computer shopping centers, including the
Golden Computer Arcade. I think Hong Kong is better for computer stuff these days than Akihabara in Tokyo. One particular find: in the official Nokia store on
Nathan Road, I found a USB charger for the Nokia cell phones I have. So far as I know, those are unavailable elsewhere because Nokia gets fat margins on their proprietary wall-warts, but I read last year that the Chinese government was going to insist that all cell phones sold in China be chargeable from USB ...
The tailored suit hawkers on nearly every corner of Nathan Road near the harbor got very old, very fast. Towards the end of my visit, I wanted to be able to say "piss off, wanker" in Hindi.
So much good food.
The more I do business with
HSBC, the more I like them because they really understand people who travel and ex-pats. They do have some issues, however, which I'll go into later.
I'm going to come back to Hong Kong again.
