Stars and Wars

bonnie-j thought the Imperial War Museum was good when she was here [Edit: not good good but interesting with faults], so when furrfu suggested it as a Saturday activity, I was keen to go. gmh came too and it was great going round with someone who is knowledgable on the subject. We spent most of our time in the main hall where the big exhibits like the tanks and planes were. Some of the equipment looked distinctly rickety to modern eyes, I'm amazed anyone was brave enough to get in these things.

It was interesting to see weapons like the V1 right after reading about it. Remembering gmh's comments about "the stiff upper lip", I'd recently got out a book of interviews of people at the homefront which included stories of the bombing. Most of the book was what I expected, but one fact stuck out: nine out of ten houses in London were destroyed or damaged during the war. I knew the city had taken a pounding, but wow.

After ten on Sunday night, Wingnut and me went to the park to see if we could see something of the Perseids meteor shower. After ten minutes of peering into the sky, Wingnut saw two meteors in short order. Twenty minutes later, I'd still seen nothing moving except for a satellite and lots of annoying planes. It was going to be just like the squirrels, I knew it. I started to mutter about the cold ground I was lying on and made ready to leave. Shooting star! Yes! Reverse psychology works. :-)
