Headscarf Ban in Schools

Sep 06, 2004 20:25

A belated update. While watching the news on Friday, I spotted another reason why resistance to the ban on Muslim headscarves at school is so small. As one of the pupils approached the school gates, she obediently took off the scarf that covered her head and shoulders to reveal...a kerchief that covered almost all of her hair.

I was also amused to see a teacher assure a journalist that she was making sure that no headscarves, nope no headscarves at all were worn in the school. "Euh, and other religious symbols", she eventually remembered to add.

Of course, the main reason why the Ministry of Education has had it so easy is thanks to the Iraqi hostage takers. Anyone opposing the ban now could be accused of breaking solidarity with the two journalists.
