There's Somebody At The Door

Apr 28, 2006 18:09

A while back a police officer came round to ask about disturbances during the night at the nursery just down the road. Apparently, youths had been getting drunk there and lighting fires. I was no help at all because I hadn't noticed a thing, but that's not surprising because I enter the estate from the other side when I come home at night.

When we moved in here, we found a doom-laden letter from the local housing office talking about problems with arson, violence and other entertaining matters. But we haven't seen any evidence of this. I suspect this was an estate that used to have problems but now has the close attention of police and officialdom in general, so that any trouble is promptly sat on. The estate is well-lit with play areas and I feel quite safe here.

I was also canvassed for the first time in my life recently. It was one of the Liberal Democrat councillors who started his pitch with environmental matters, which for one moment had me wondering if I had "greenie" tattoed on my forehead. His willingness to answer my questions on a variety of subjects was thrown into sharp relief by the Labour party rep who came round a couple of weeks later and only seemed interested in finding out which party I supported. Somewhat similar to Clanwilliam's experience except without the Tories (no surprise because they haven't a prayer in this borough).

Of course, the local elections in this borough have become more "interesting" as George Galloway's Respect party has alleged fraud with regard to the postal votes which is now under investigation. I'll write more on that once there's more signal than noise.
