Baking

It's so nice living in a country again where they understand about home baking. Where baking powder comes in decent pots instead of puny sachets and where, when I ask for bicarb in a supermarket, I don't get sent to the section for cleaning products ( Read more... )

Someone showed me an expat book once that had hints on alternative places to buy various ingredients. For example, for baking soda it advised going to an Chinese/Asian shop because the Chinese often use it to tenderise meat. Maybe there's a specialty shop that sells live yeast as a regular thing.

But no oven at all, awwww...

The only time I've seen live yeast in supermarkets is leading up to New Year's Eve. Proper oliebollen made from scratch need live yeast.

Of course, you're also now in a country where things like crumpets and muffins (that's muffin muffins, not the things which are really cupcakes) can be obtained over the counter from your local shop, rather than requiring complex import arrangements and a helpful person who's travelling in the right direction.

Oddly enough, our small local supermarket in Paris started stocking muffins at a certain point. They were marketed under their budget brand and of good quality. This was the same supermarket whose cheapest biscuits were very nice pseudo-speculaas.

But it is nice that I don't have to ask people to bring bulky food items with them (and for myself, if I never see another carton of Chocomel... *g*). Even better, I can get an array of flavours like the lovely cheese/black pepper and cinnamon/raisin. And have I mentioned hot cross buns? I love hot cross buns.
