There's been a huge uproar over an attack which had an anti-semitic cast to it. A woman with a baby was attacked on a train by a group of six teens/young men. They cut her hair and clothes and they drew swastikas on her. None of the other passengers would help her. At the next stop, the attackers ran off with her money.
Cue lots of handwaving by politicians, especially over the sharp rise in anti-semitic attacks this year. However, I don't think this was a specifically anti-semitic crime.
There's a discrepancy between French and foreign news reports. They're all headlining with the fact that this is an anti-semitic attack. However, the French articles explain that the attackers pulled out the woman's wallet and found her (old) address. It was the address, in a so-called 'rich' area, that triggered the anti-semitic insults. Seeing as this happened during the harassment, they can't have targeted her because they thought she was a Jew, which is what all the news stories imply.
I wonder why she was picked as a victim. Did they know her? They got on the train and almost immediately started in on her. Did they plan it? Usually a gang like that needs time to psych themselves up.
