Back From Dublin

The trip to Ireland for a wedding was great but tiring, so after catching up on various things this week, I've spent this weekend doing nothing more strenuous than reading books.

The wedding was absolutely fabulous. It would have been hard to find a bride and groom more happy and cheerful or guests more spoiled. A good indication of the party's success was the strangely subdued bunch of normally talkative people that I observed through my prised open eyelids the next morning in the hotel lobby.

Thanks to Dónal's generosity, I returned home lugging a flatscreen he had going spare. Okay, Wingnut did most of the lugging, but I was there supporting him all the way.

Getting the monitor in its box through Dublin Airport security after their security scare the previous week was fun. Things still weren't back to normal by Tuesday, we had to take off our belts and shoes before being let through the metal detector, so I got to sit in the middle of the floor and struggle with my DMs. (Funky over-the-knee, black and white striped socks available from any good sock shop.)

Wingnut was subjected to a random search. Told him he should have shaved. :-) Then the x-ray people couldn't make out what was in the cardboard box because of all the bubble wrap we'd put around the monitor. The security guy looked pretty relieved when we told him we had tape and we'd be happy to get the hell out of his way and repack it ourselves. I felt sorry for them, their lives must have gotten a lot more difficult since last week.

Dónal had decided to give me a flatscreen to replace my big monitor partly because he'd heard I lived in the world's smallest apartment. (I've had Dutch people visit this flat and protest, "but it's not that bad at all." I'd kill them but I have no room to hide the bodies.) So now I have a nifty monitor on my desk that can survive drops from 50cm, er, thatisworkingquitenicely and might get rid of the minor headaches I've been getting. Cheers, mate.
