Here's some advice for anyone doing one of those cheap day trips to Amsterdam.
In order to get the most out of one's dollar, the smart traveller combines sleeping and travelling whenever possible. Which is why the night ferries to Rotterdam are such a great deal.
Losing one's mates during your eight hours in Amsterdam is not so smart. However, you've just made it onto the train back to the port, so things are looking up.
Sadly, it's at this point you are reminded of what Rotterdam is famous for. Boats. Lots and lots of boats. So many boats that ferries from different companies leave from different ports.
As Wingnut said, you could possibly wave at your ferry to Hull from Hoek van Holland Haven, but that's not the same as being on the other side at Europoort where you need to be.
So, to the guy wearing an Amsterdam hat in Rotterdam, you seemed nice, I hope you made it home safe.
P.S. Don't pay too much attention to the helpful drunk man with clanking glass in his bike bag. Have you seen the colour of the liquid in those bottles?
