The Children of Southam Street

Btw, yesterday's cute 80's kid was not me. :-) That photo, like the others in the gallery, was found among books donated to Amnesty.

More photos, but by a professional this time. I've been reading the very interesting Adolescent Boys of East London by Peter Wilmott (pub. 1969) which I found in the one pound basket. A commenter on Flickr remarked that the boys on the cover weren't from East London but probably from around Notting Hill as the photo used had been taken by Roger Mayne.

Roger Mayne is apparently a well known English photographer who is best known for photographing children on Southam Street in Notting Hill in the 1950's and 60's. They're wonderful black & white photos and what most strikes me is the sense of compassion. Have a look. There are more mostly London shots under Streets and Teenage too.

P.S. Londoners might recognise, as I did, one of the photos that was on posters everywhere advertising a Tate Britain exhibition two years ago: Girl Jiving in Southam Street. Although I hadn't quite clicked to the fact that that was what she was doing at the time.
