Watari examined the packet in his hand critically. Well, that was certainly an unexpected...fruit. Even in Sieben, he hadn't expected to find condoms growing on trees. "Hmm." He shrugged, and tucked it into the pocket of his lab coat. Two of them, after a moment of thought. If he planted them in the earth and let them have sunlight, would another condom tree grow? Was cross-fertilization between all these trees possible? Would it grow into something different? He'd bury one in the wrapper and one without it, just to be certain. If it failed, he could come out here and get more samples.

Continuing on his way, he wondered just where that place Haohmaru had mentioned was. He wouldn't mind getting the chance to research those worms he'd mentioned...Oh, hello. There was a boy!

...A guinea pig. Watari had been picking candies and fruits off of the trees, and needed someone less intelligent than Martha to try them out. "Are you lost?" he called out cheerfully, waving his hand so the boy would see him.

Jun stopped and turned around, eying the blond man suspiciously. The guy seemed far too cheerful and something about him, something the boy couldn't even name, made him a little bit cautious.

"Not really," he replied curtly.

Hm, now that was no way for a young man to act. It reminded him strongly of bon--of Hisoka--and he found himself a little bit lonely for Meifu. He hoped someone had remembered to care for 003. It had been a while...

He adjusted his glasses, his friendly smile not faltering. "Ah, my mistake, then. I'd thought perhaps you were a new arrival, since we haven't met before..."

Of course, Watari hadn't met a lot of the Sieben residents in person--he spent much of his time inside, running his tests. But something about the boy had seemed lost in one way or another.

"Well, I am new," Jun pointed out. "But claiming that I'd be lost seems a little bit weird, as the entire place is new for me. I'd be lost where ever I went." He shrugged and shoved his hands into the pockets of his jacket, glancing up at the blond from underneath his bangs.

"What's it to you anyway?"

"Hm, I suppose that makes a certain sort of sense." Watari shrugged his lab coat up on his shoulders--it was a little bit chilly this evening.

"What's it to me? Mou. I'm just trying to be friendly!" Never mind that he'd intended, a minute ago, to see if he could get the boy to be his guinea pig; that was before he'd reminded him so strongly of Hisoka. And anyone who reminded him of Hisoka on an instinctual level like that probably needed someone to talk to, especially in a strange place like this. He mellowed a little bit, sticking his hands in his pockets. "At any rate, the woods around here can be dangerous. Are you capable of taking care of yourself?"

An adult just trying to be friendly for the sake of friendliness? Well, that would be a new one, that much was for certain. They always had one or two ulterior motives, as far as Jun was concerned, so why would this one be any different?

At the last question, Jun looked up and shrugged. "I have a gun." His hands started to search around his waist band to show the man, but he found out that his hand was just grasping for thin air.

"...Or I used to have."

Watari laughed, very openly. He took a chocolate out of his pocket and ate it--even on the off-chance it had a side effect, it probably wouldn't be too bad given Shinigami physiology. "Used to? Then it might be better to stick with someone until you're back near the camp, mightn't it?" Smiling in a vaguely amused way, he extended a hand. "I'm Watari Yutaka."

"Ushiro Jun." The boy crossed his arms over his chest and quirked an eyebrow as he looked up at Watari. "And if you were to play my body guard... I'm gonna ask again. What's in it for you?"

'What's in it for you?' Hm. Now, just what had this boy lived through to make him ask that so quickly? Watari wasn't about to ask. Everyone had their secrets and their reasons. Some people were best not to push--were best to just keep offering to, casually, until they opened on their own.

"If you want to give me something...Hm, I've already got a lab assistant. Money means nothing here. And the shirt off your back looks like it would be a little small for me." He winked. "So you'd have to come up with something on your own, I guess. I've got nothing."

Jun merely shrugged and started walking in the direction he thought (hoped) that the camp - or whatever you wanted to call it - might be.

After a moment of silence, he glanced up at the long haired man and drawled:

"So, basically, you're saying you're just helping me out of the goodness of your heart, is that it?"

He smiled good-naturedly at Jun, lacing his fingers together behind his head to form a sort of cushion as he walked. "More or less," he said. "It isn't like I'm going too terribly far out of my way." He could always collect samples later on. The time-sensitive phenomena seemed to be preceded by the owls contacting everyone, so he could time those, and take the rest at his leisure.

Jun uttered a muted 'mmhm' at that, and continued to walk quietly, hands shoved down into his pockets again, and he kept his eyes locked at his feet, missing out on the strange nature around him, but then again, he wasn't really interested in looking, as he had already concluded that it was weird, and that was that.

Watari walked slowly, keeping pace with the shorter boy. He paused every now and then to pick something off of a tree and tuck it in his pocket. "So, how old are you, Jun-kun?" he asked, as he examined a small glass elephant. Jun-kun. That sounded funny. He would have to figure out something better to call him.

"Just call me Ushiro," the boy mumbled, giving a light shrug. "Everyone does. And I'm thirteen. And you?"

"Hm...Let's see." Watari pondered. He didn't think about his age very often--it wasn't like it was going to change anything anytime soon, and the only reason he hadn't forgotten about it entirely to make room for other thoughts was that it was occasionally relevant in issues of seniority in Meifu. "I came from...the late 1990's, so that would mean I'm coming up on 50 now!" He laughed. It seemed like longer, sometimes.

Jun stopped, eyes widening slightly, then he shrugged. After seeing a white and pink Mickey Mouse look alike with the attitude of Freddy Kreuger, he wasn't really easily surprised anymore. "Well, looks like you're aging well then."
