SD comic-con, day one

Jul 22, 2011 00:07

i didn't necessarily plan to go to comic-con this year, but i went with my brother today. we had signed up to be volunteers months ago just in case there were really good panels. even though everything's a little meh this year, neither of us had anything better to do, so we decided to go. a decision we made literally the night before. i went to bed around 3 am, woke up around 7 am, and then we hit the road around 8 am. after parking and riding the tram to the convention center, we managed to get there around 10~ am. sadly, we still weren't early enough to get a good volunteer slot. still, we managed to go to a few good panels before our volunteer assignment.

first, a panel with jo chen, an amazing artist. who, among many other projects, does the cover art for a lot of joss whedon's comics.

second, there was a small marvel panel. kinda boring. it was interesting to learn they're making their comics digital, but not surprising.

third, the napoleon dynamite panel, which was my favorite of the day. the whole cast was there, and they were a riot. the producer told a crying infant to stfu. no joke. they were there because they're making an animated cartoon series that's going to be on fox. a few short clips were shown, and i was sufficiently amused. plus, they gave us a spiffy free t-shirt and a button! :D

after those panels, we had to go volunteer. for three hours, i was standing there and holding a bloody sign that said, "traffic passes to the right." it was for 'crowd/line management' and a completely useless task. i was bored out of my bleeding skull. however, a few good things did come of this assignment. first and foremost, joey richter (aka AVPM!ron) walked by and i stopped him for a quick hug. i think brian holden (AVPM!remus) and the girl who played molly were also walking with him, but they were less recognizable and i was more excited to see joey because i had spotted him at comic-con last year too. another good thing was that i was able to snap a few photos of passing cosplayers. other than that, i hated it.

once we were done, we ran over to catch the rest of a panel with jon favreau and guillermo del toro. del toro was, as always, fucking hilarious. nothing else was going on after that ended, so we picked up our t-shirts, and then headed back. only we got on the wrong tram, so it took us even longer to get back to the car and get our arses home.

suffice to say, i'm exhausted from all the standing and running around. we're not going tomorrow because there's no one really worth seeing, but we're planning to go again on saturday because i need my annual dose of kevin smith. last year, he made me laugh so hard i cried.
