[psych, gender] Observed Diff between Drag Queens and Women

Nov 11, 2007 11:48

Random insight: One issue I seem to spend a lot of time on with a lot of women is that they have been very, very deeply socialized not to be aggressive. For women so socialized (perhaps most) that cuts across all domains of aggression, not just physical fighting, but verbal altercations, too.

But boys are socialized to be aggressive, to give as good as they get. When such a boy grows up and puts on a dress, he's probably noticed that women don't typically duke it out with their dukes, but unless he also identifies as female (and sometimes even then) he probably hasn't generalized that realization to verbal agression.

Hence the famed dishiness of drag queens. They aren't going to hit back with their fists, but nothing slows them from cutting back with a verbal barb. Not only are they quick to respond to hostility with a keen wit, they do so not defensively, but with a "bring it on, mofo, I can take you" attitude, the attitude of being eagar for the fight.
