I still don't think he'll get the nomination in 2020 or 2024, because he's clearly too loathed by pretty much everyone who has ever worked with him, and that's a very bad way to end up nominated for president. OTOH, if there's another astoundingly terrible Republican field, he might win out, but even then I'm not certain.

This scenario is certainly plausible, but it requires Cruz developing a reputation for competence and "getting things done" in order to run against Trump's presumed record of the opposite. Today if you ask most Americans, even most Republicans, what Cruz has "got done", they'll say, at best, "he shut down the government over Obamacare." So for Cruz to make this work, he would have to first pivot into something of a "team player" (at least within the Senate) rather than an obstructionist.

I don't think proving competence is necessary to developing a reputation for competence on the Right.

I wouldn't discount the possibility of the US breaking apart under Trump. There's secessionist movements popping up here and there, and I expect them to become much stronger when confronted with truly incompetent, malicious federal goverment.

Cruz was the only one scarier than Trump. Trump is a pathologically insecure con man. Cruz is the antichrist. It is his destiny to imminentize the eschaton.

No disagreement on sentences 1-3. Re 4: is that a mistake or a cleverness?

I believe it's properly spelled "immanentize" in this context :-)

I believe he'll be the GOP nominee, but why do you think the Democrat won't win?

I think this is a really astute analysis, and puts very clearly a few thoughts that I had swirling around half-formed in my head. And you could actually see on his face that he knew exactly what he was doing, and it was a scary, scary look on him. I mean he *generally* looks terrifying and smug but this particular speech had a supervillainous edge that really took my breath away.

And much like you I remembered that the last time a convention speech had surprised me like that was Obama's in 2004. I'll never forget us crowding around the TV saying "Who the fuck is this guy??" And by the end of the speech we all knew it wasn't a matter of if he'd run for president, but when. I think we were all thinking closer to 2024 though...he seemed so young in 2004.
