[sci/eng, tech, hist, internet, music] Fwd: "Our Comrade the Electron"

Aug 09, 2014 17:58

Maciej Ceglowski, of Pinboard.in, in his "Our Comrade the Electron", has, as far as I am concerned, written the sequel I always wanted but didn't know I wanted to Neal Stephenson's "Mother Earth, Motherboard".

I recommend it to you without reservations. It's a magnificent read and a delight of wonder, as the best non-fiction is. I could tell you what it's about, but that would be a spoiler. I will say it involves electrical engineering, politics, and the history of music. Allow yourself the treat of astonishment, and settle in with a beverage of your choice and let it unfold for you.

Note for the visually impaired: It has pictures, but they are unnecessary; there are videos alluded to in the text, but they are also unnecessary if you know what a theramin sounds like, and in any event are not linked on that page.
