This is my local K6 phone kiosk, in Ellisland Drive, Dumfries. BT wanted to get rid of it because it's no longer profitable, but it's been offered a reprieve if the local community can raise £575 per year to pay for its upkeep. We've raised some money already and more has been pledged, but we're still looking for sponsors. If anyone out there would like to contribute, please reply to this and I'll send you details. If you give us £10 or more, you get a nice certificate to hang on your wall, an enamel phone box pin badge and a keyring featuring a picture of your sponsored phone box or any other picture and/ or slogan you want to e-mail to me. Buy for yourself or as an unusual gift for someone with an interest in British heritage.
This is one of the few old-fashioned red phone boxes left in the area, and as such I think it deserves to be conserved for its aesthetic and historical value. It encourages pride in the area. I haven't Photoshopped out any litter: this is genuinely the least littered part of the neighbourhood. With the games area and playpark on one side of the road and a traditional red phone box on the other, it's a really nice place.
The phone's location is of great benefit to the local community. It's very close to and within sight of facilities used frequently by local youngsters: behind the tree on the right of the pic you can see the Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) and the local community centre. It also serves locations with a poor mobile signal, where those with no landline might not be able to phone from home. I used it a lot when I first moved into the area, and had various phone calls to make (as you do when you move house) and also various workmen visiting and deliveries (as you do when you move house), couldn't get a decent signal on my mobile (which is PAYG so would cost a fortune anyway even for 'freephone' numbers), so found it immensely useful to be able to phone from somewhere from which I could see anyone approaching my house. Since the phone box is visible from several local streets this is a benefit which will be shared by others moving to the area.
