I'm on a jazz record buying thing again. It's an absolutely amazing time to be collecting, with all the spectacular reissues coming out in the last year.
The experts can go into all the detail better and I can. As mentioned in that great article I linked there, the Blue Note reissues, especially the Tone Poet stuff is just...perfect. Jazz is all about a good rabbit hole. You hear someone on a record and you're blown away and you hunt down the discography. And/or you hear their story and want to know more. I knew about Lee Morgan, but not how he died. This documentary on Netflix about that was extraordinary! It was a Lee Morgan weekend. The Cooker came in the mail yesterday.
Lonely Are the Brave was on Criterion, part of the
Dalton Trumbo series of films they're showing right now. You knew where this film was going from the first frame. Was still a gut punch when it finally got there. It's said this was Kirk Douglas personal favorite among his own films. Great cinematography. It's more than a little ham-fisted with it's message, but it was the 60's and for the time it's edgy.
