I confess...there's a certain science fiction sub-genre, I guess it's "steam-punk," though, I think that sells it short, and, I kinda love it. It's
Irwin Allen's fault. I got hooked on his show
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. I watch it most mornings with my coffee. That and/or
Ultraman. Then I started looking at films like
Disney's 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea,
Master Of The World,
War Gods of the Deep, and the kinda sequel to Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea,
City Beneath The Sea. These are not fine art, these are fun. Bursting at the seams with imagination. I love them.
I guess you could include
Wild, Wild West (the TV show) with the above, but...I don't want to go too far down the rabbit-hole...
Anyway, my love for this sub-genre brought me to the film I watched tonight. Robert Ryan is always amazing, and the costumes were crazy, as were the sets. Still, this is B-movie stuff all the way.
POSTSCRIPT: For dessert, as it were, I watched an episode of Circle of Fear entitled, "Earth, Air, Fire and Water." I was really excited to see this as it was a story by Harlan Ellison & D. C. Fontana. Ellison being one of my all-time favorite writers. Sadly, the show wasn't very good. At best it was a little creepy. The core idea was interesting, but...they just couldn't make it work. Still, a little bit of Ellison is better than none.
