I didn't catch the 2009 Golden Globes last night because I was watching Carolina lose yet ANOTHER basketball game (we'll right the ship soon enough, but the early season is killing me), but that doesn't mean that I can't offer my thoughts...
Best Picture - Awesome that "Slumdog Millionaire" won best drama, but I don't expect best comedy or musical winner "Vickie Christina Barcelona" to even be nominated for an Oscar. In fact, I don't see ANY of the musical or comedy nominees breaking in - the dramas are just too strong this year. But back to "Slumdog" - I'm so happy that Danny Boyle looks to be on his way to Oscar gold. It's not sealed just yet, but this is a strong start.
Best DIrector - Again, while the other movies were great (and I was sad to see no Darren Aronofsky on the list), no one created an amazing experience like Danny Boyle and "Slumdog Millionaire." I especially love David Fincher, but anyone else winning this award would be a mistake.
Best Actor - Despite my bad night, I did break into a huge smile when I heard that Mickey Rourke won best actor in a drama for "The Wrestler." His performance, while tough to watch at times, rivals that of the amazing performances we've seen over the past few years, and it was great to see the man get his due. I was also happy for best actor in a comedy or musical winner Colin Farrell because I enjoyed "In Bruges." Although I don't expect Farrell to get an Oscar nomination, this was a nice consolation prize for the young actor.
Best Actress - What a night for Kate Winslet! I confess that I've seen exactly one of the movies nominated in either category ("Burn After Reading," with nominee Francis McDormand, was the first date for my girlfriend and I), and with this boost, I'll have to get on the ball. Can't speak too much here, though, until I see the movies.
Best Supporting Actor - I haven't seen "Doubt" so I can't rate Philip Seymour Hoffman, but Heath Ledger definitely deserved the award for his portrayal of the Joker in "The Dark Knight." It was an amazing performance, and this was probably the first step toward Oscar gold.
Best Supporting Actress - Again, Kate Winslet! With this award, I'm definitely seeing "The Reader." This is another set of movies that I need to see in the next few weeks.
Best Screenplay - Again, "Slumdog," and it's deserved. It will be interesting to see the nominees and winner when the Oscars break these into Original and Adapted screenplay categories. I think the WGA awards might shine more light on this category.
Best Animated FIlm - I think I may upgrade my Netflix account JUST to see "Wall-E" on Blu-ray, and that's an accomplishment unto itself (since I currently have to watch the disc at work). This will be the runaway winner in this category at every award ceremony.
All in all, an interesting night, but nothing that really shocked outside of the WInslet double-win. Oscar nominations are January 24th, and this was a great prelude to that.
