[01: Video] Introduction to Madness

[She's the definition of plain, down to the clothes that do nothing for her figure and the unstylish glasses. Her voice is an absolute monotone with no inflection save for emphasis on a specific word or two.]

I'm pretty sure I didn't sign for this, and I'm pretty sure my parents can't sign for it now that I'm eighteen. [Mom definitely wouldn't ( Read more... )

It is no madness, Lady. The fantastical circumstances are indeed true.

If you do indeed require a coat of some sort, there is an indoor marketplace in the northwestern quarter of the city, but I fear much will have been spoiled by the recent rains and flooding. By winter, many of us should have our wool carded and spun, and hopefully will have knitted or woven warm clothing. Perhaps in a few months, a trade may be arranged, although I know not if any coat would be white as you request. The sheep who gave us the wool were not of the usual variety.

And you must be a refugee from Ye Old Homespun Times.

[Then again, she's probably as crazy as anyone else here. And Juliet seems nice and helpful at least.]

I am from Verona, in the year 149X.

[She curtsies and smiles.]

I am Juliet Capulet. And you, Lady?

[Ok, this is a whole new can of crazy. Right.]

Boy have I got a lot to tell you. Mostly from history cla-

[She cuts off mid-sentence. Alright, this girl thinks she's Juliet Capulet?]

Are you about to tell me you live in Verona?

I did until I found myself in this place. I have been here nearly three months now.

Why would you even suggest such a thing? I, Lady, am a Capulet.

[She hastily switches the feed to private.]

I know not how you know such things, Lady, but I would thank you not to mention them in public. Should my cousin Tybalt learn of this, I fear what would happen. As my husband is not here, it is best for my cousin to remain ignorant of the situation.

[This lady seriously thinks she's-

On the other hand, she's obviously read the play more than any of the students in Daria's class ever did. Partial credit for that.]

Don't worry. I won't tell him anything.

No one usually talks to me about that sort of thing anyway.

[She looks very visibly relieved at this.]

I thank you. Though I do not think his temper would ever be directed against me, I am no fool. Tybalt would not take such news calmly.

What sort of thing, Lady. Marriage? But, you are of an age where such things would be talked of quite often, I would expect. You look to be of a similar age to me.

I'd like to think I have a few years yet before I have to decide if the convenience of filing jointly is really worth switching one dysfunctional family for another.

Your parents have not broached the subject with you? Goodness knows mine have. Father and Mother seem convinced I should marry Count Paris. [She shudders slightly.]

Thankfully, I should not have to worry over that particular match any more. I would not want to marry a fop!

They're more likely to have to worry about my sister running off to get married to whichever of her beleaguered suitors she decides to favor before she thinks she's getting old and wrinkled at age sixteen.

Your sister and I are of the same age. She has many suitors? Surely your parents can choose a respectable gentleman from among them for her to marry. It is not right to lead many men a merry dance.

There's no reason a woman can't choose for herself. But you're right it'd be nice if Quinn would stop playing with all of them at once.

You come from a time and place where such things are allowable.

[She's starting to get used to this idea, so it's a statement, rather than a question.]

Would that it were so in my time as well. Then I would not have to keep secrets from my respected parents.

Your sister Quinn sounds like the Prince's nephew Mercutio, in a way. The ladies say he is quite amorous.
