I think you are being really naive in thinking that a job like that would be safe. I realize Marquette isn't really the center for violence and crime, but regardless that kind of thinking is what gets one into trouble in the first place. For example, "oh it's northville...blah blah blah." A lot people say that too, but bad shit goes down everywhere, you know? Smaller towns seem to pose more danger because it's likely that there would be not a lot of people around at night if something were to happen when you were working. I don't think taking that job would be worth the risk. The pay would probably be around minimum wage, which is definitely not enough to put your safety on, ever. I agree in thinking that it's shitty that especially because you are female it makes jobs like that extra not safe, but I think that that's just how it is. A lot of people would consider a female an easier target than a man. A lot of people would try more shit on you than a man working that same job. It would be interesting to come across all the people that you would working that kind of job, but it's definitely not safe and definitely not worth putting your physical safety and well being on the line for.
And just because you are a woman doesn't mean they won't hire you. Did your mom say that or are you just thinking that's how the people hiring will approach it? I see women working at gas stations all the time. Remember that one time when we cashed my lottery tickets and there was that lady and that guy working that we had a good laugh with?
