So, Sunday afternoon, I ate and played around on the computer, then took a little nap. It was, like, 6:00 before I sat down and started dividing my hair into theoretically manageable units for the dyeing. I was having a very hard time with the whole process. I just couldn't make all the things work quite right, but Lovelace came to my rescue and took over the job. I think it doesn't help that I have hip-length hair. I mean, I'm likely to tuck my hair into my jeans along with my shirt if I'm wearing my hair down. I don't quite sit on my own hair, but I'm not far from it. It's long, but it isn't exactly abundant. If I had thick hair, I don't think I'd be able to wear it this long; that much hair would be painful.
The colour I mixed up in the bowl was a very pretty vivid purple. Once the dye was in and my head wrapped in cling film, I was feeling pretty optimistic about the whole thing. I felt even more optimistic a little later, as I rinsed my hair and watched the vibrant purple colour wash down the drain.
My optimism was misplaced. I combed my hair out Monday morning, and was very disappointed. At the time, I thought in my head, 'This is disappointing as fuck', which wasn't entirely accurate. It would've been better to say that the results were as disappointing as a bad fuck. Even though Lovelace made a point of making sure the top of my head was well saturated, the colour didn't penetrate at all. Seriously, it looked like the dye just slid right off the hair. So my extensive roots remained brown. As for the rest, the coverage was uneven and the colour was inconsistent, as if the mixture separated as it was painted on my hair. It was all very sad, and I was terribly disappointed. I'm going to Knoxville to visit friends later this week, and I'd really wanted pretty purple hair for that. For the holidays, in general, really. We were very sad pandas.
It's not like my hair was damaged, and it didn't turn green or anything like that, but it just didn't look right. I was having visions of spending the holidays with my hair braided and tucked away beneath hats and scarves. But then I called Junkman's Daughter to see if they might have my usual dye in stock, and they did. The salesgirl said they had two bottles of Special Effects Deep Purple, then I asked if she'd put them to the side for me. She happily obliged, and the dye was waiting for me at the counter when I got there. In fact, they'd even found a third bottle, so I just bought all three.
So yesterday afternoon, we gave it another go. I did nothing so foolish as to post that I was feeling optimistic (rookie mistake) or that I was certain it would come out well since we were using the just-right thing ... none of that. We set up the dyeing station in John's restroom and just got to it. Well,
paidiraiompair and
bheansidhe got to it. I just sat quietly on the floor and let them work. Dyeing my hair has never gone so quickly. Between the two of them, they knocked it out with speed. Seriously. If it took more than half an hour, I'd be shocked.
I washed the dye out a little while before bedtime. I could tell as soon as I took the towel off my head that last night's efforts had been far more successful than Sunday's. I was so pleased, I even took a picture. I wonder if I can remember how to post photos here. It's been nearly 3 years. Anyhow, I was delighted with even those preliminary results. The coverage was even and the colour gratifyingly consistent. What had been brown was now a purple so deep as to be nearly black ... until I step out into the sun, of course. Then the almost-black will transform into ZOMG SO PURPLE!!!
