Russian approval of Protocol 14 - a commitment to Europe
Statement by Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland
Strasbourg, 15.01.2010 - “I have just been informed by the leadership of the State Duma that they have approved ratification of Protocol 14 to the European Convention on Human Rights. This is a significant decision by the State Duma, and will be of importance for the whole of Europe. The Protocol will help the Court to deal with its backlog of cases and reinforce its vital role in defending the human rights of individual citizens throughout Europe.
During our recent meeting in Moscow, President Medvedev assured me that Russian membership in the Council of Europe is key to his efforts to modernise Russia’s judicial system. Today’s approval of the ratification will clearly help this reform and the Russian authorities can count on our full support in this respect.
By joining the other 46 member states, Russia is sending a strong signal of its commitment to Europe,” declared Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland.
