Spain's CHARACTER SURVEY OF DOOM [unfinished]
Body and Appearance
1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
There isn't really any official information on how tall Spain is, but I like to think he's around Prussia's height, which was given at around 5'9". I imagine him a bit taller, though. He's leanly muscled, with strong arms and legs. Kind of athletic, since he plays soccer football. Graceful and flexible since he likes to dance.
2. How old is he?
As a Nation, he's thousands of years old and he's lost count of how old he is really. But physically, he looks like he's in his mid-twenties.
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
Nowadays, he stands tall, but with a bit of a relaxed slouch to him. People can almost mistake him for being submissive and unassuming, when in truth he's just very chill.
4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
He's physically fit. He exercises a lot through playing football and doing all sorts of work, like planting tomatoes and helping out in cafes. However, because of the state of his economy, he might have a bit of a cold. He's fine though despite this. He's not so ill that he would take to his bed or stop smiling.
5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
He moves fluidly, with a matador's grace. He has great physical reflexes, comes from being always up and about and again, playing football and dancing. Plus his experience with battle. But there are the odd times when he would slip up and hit his head or trip over something. He's also totally defenseless against Romano's bouts of violence.
6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
Very attractive! He's very handsome and his bright, infectious smile makes him even more so. He always attracts attention wherever he goes, not that he notices it that much. He is aware that he is good-looking, though, but he doesn't think much of it. As far as he's concerned, he looks all right. He thinks France or Germany are much more attractive looks-wise than he is.
7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
He is actually fair-skinned, but he spends so much time out in the sun, especially during the summer months, that he usually has a tan. His tan isn't always even, but he doesn't mind all too much.
8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
His hair is brown and curly. Nowadays, he keeps it short, though there are times when he forgets to get a haircut and it grows out, curling over the collar of his shirts. Back in his Empire days, his hair was much longer and he kept it in a ponytail. Not really for style, though he knows he looks very good with it. It's more out of necessity since he spends a lot of time traveling or abroad that he doesn't have time to get a hair cut.
9. What color are his eyes?
Green, like emeralds.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
The fandom seems to be united in the fact that he has a nice ass. XD; Aside from that, I think he has nicely toned arms and torso. We haven't seen him shirtless yet, but his chest and stomach in that uniform? Niiiiiice.
11. What are his chief tension centers?
Probably the back of his neck and shoulders when he's stressed. Other than that, he's usually relaxed.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
He's a tshirt and jeans kind of guy normally. He likes clothes that he could move easily around in or get dirty because of the physical work he usually does. He also like to wear long shorts on occassion, especially during hot days. He likes neutral colors for his pants and shorts and bright colors for his shirts. Do you know those famed "Shut Up!" shirts? He also has a couple of those. He'll wear clothes until they have holes in them and even then he might still use them. For work, he has to wear formal shirts, coats, and ties, so he complies. His suits are Italian, since Romano takes him out shopping for them (which happens probably only once a year. Spain doesn't take to shopping for too long). He also has a wealth of other fashionable Italian and French clothes in his closet, but he hardly wears them.
13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
His suits are tailored to fit him and they fit him very well. As for his other clothes, they usually fit just right or a bit loosely. He values comfort above everything else in his clothes, followed by durability.
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
No. As mentioned, he prefers to be more casual when he isn't doing Nation stuff. When he is working, he's in a suit.
15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
Boxers. He likes the freedom. He also doesn't mind going commando. I bet there are even days when he forgets to put on underwear. XD;
Speech
1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
His voice is just right for a man, not too deep and not too high. When he gets excitable, that's when the pitch starts to go up. He rolls his r's.
2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
He talks a lot. He is a constant fountain of stories and well wishes. It's easy for him to get into conversation with anyone as he is genuinely interested in people. He talks fast when he's excited and often switches to Spanish when it happens. You have to remind him or else he'll just talk and talk and talk and you won't understand if you don't know Spanish.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
He's Spanish, so he usually flavors his words with a Spanish accent when he speaks a different language. He rolls his r's, as mentioned. Sometimes he has a lisp, due to the so-called Castilian lisp. And of course there's the famous "buhyoooooo!" when he thinks something is cute.
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
He speaks Spanish, French, Latin, Italian, English, and German, with varying levels of fluency. Despite how fluent he is with other languages, he still tends to speak with a Spanish accent, unless he makes an effort to correct his pronunciation. He's also familiar with Arabic, though he has forgotten a lot of it.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
He switches languages depending on who he's speaking with or what the occasion is. Sometimes he speaks the language of those he's speaking with and at other times he speaks Spanish if people speak it with him.
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
He's at his best when he spontaneously speaks from the heart and that's what he usually does. When he has to think about what he says or watch his words, that's usually when he finds difficulty with words.
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
He is very articulate, one can only become so after centuries of being involved in politics. However, sometimes Spain gives way to his instinctual passion and finds himself unable to come up with the right words. He's usually more of action-speaks-louder-than-words kind of guy.
Mental and Emotional
1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
Being at war has given him intelligence with strategy and tactics. He learns better from experience rather than books. His intelligence lies on physicality, practicality, and common sense (though I sometimes wonder if he has any...). Book learning bores him most of the time, though he does appreciate poetry and literature.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
'Definitely thinks on his feet.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
Many people wonder if Spain thinks at all, but he does. It's just that he lets his heart govern most things, that's all. He is optimistic and intuitive and always hopes for the best outcome. He's very well capable of rational and practical thinking when it's required, but usually he lets his heart be his guide.
4. What kind of education has the character had?
Extensive. He was taught all sorts of topics and skills through the centuries by all sorts of peoples and bosses with varying degrees of retention and skill. Nowadays, he's learning how to use modern gadgets. The uses of a lot of them still escape him.
5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
Anything physical is his expertise, so sports, dancing, sword-fighting, etc. He also likes to read literature and poetry, though he doesn't understand them or interpret them correctly some of the time. He also enjoys cooking and music.
6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
Extrovert.
7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
The best word to describe him is "passionate." He gives his all in everything. If he is sad, he gets very sad. If he is happy, he is very happy. Usually though, he's a pretty laid-back kind of person, so long as he doesn't get excitable over something.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
He'll give you a bright smile and start asking questions about you while introducing himself. He's very open and friendly towards new people. He approaches new situations with optimism, always.
9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
React. At times, he could be very lazy, though when he does start working, he works very hard.
10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
Definitely fight. He didn't become an Empire by running away at the first sign of danger or resistance.
11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Silly situations and pranks make him laugh. He doesn't much appreciate sarcasm or puns. They actually usually fly over his head, so they're wasted on him.
12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
One cannot be a Nation without being a little crazy, I guess. Spain can be kind of bi-polar, but I don't think he thinks much of it. Or he tries not to.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
His centuries as an empire and a world power, definitely. Then of course the years of the civil war.
14. What does he fear?
Being completely and utterly alone.
15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
As a Nation, of course he hopes for a better tomorrow for his country and his people. Things are bleak at the moment, but he's hoping that things will be better in the future. As a person, I think Spain just wishes that all his fellow Nations, his great, big family all get along well. And in my headcanon, he's with England, so he wishes that they will be together for a long time.
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him?
Probably how much he really is dependent on others emotionally.
Relationships
1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
If he had parents, he doesn't remember them much. His father-figure was definitely Rome and he looked up to him and wanted to be like him.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
He has a big brother, Portugal, whom he loves very, very much. They don't always agree eye-to-eye, but of course that always happens between siblings. He deals a lot easier with his brother's relations with England, though he now also watches his brother more guardedly as he used to since he is now with England. He also treats France like a brother and France seems to enjoy being an older brother to Spain. Historically, they never had the best of relations, but nowadays they're very amiable. France is one of his best friends.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
Do his former colonies count? Well, a lot of them don't seem to like him much, but he loves them all in his own way.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
The Italies! They're so cute and he's always been fond of them, particularly Romano, whom he treats like his son. Romano doesn't always seem happy to be around him, but Spain loves him anyway and would do anything for him. Then there's Prussia, who is his other bestfriend. He treats him more like a brother than anything else. And by association, he treats Germany like a little brother. He is also fond of Austria and Hungary because of the time they spent together under the Hapsburgs.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
Bestfriends! France and Prussia~ He's known France since they were provinces of Rome and he met Prussia sometime during the Crusades.
6. Does he have other close friends?
Greece, who lives nearby, and Sweden, who has helped him a lot recently.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
He makes friends very easily. He's very warm and friendly.
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
I'd like to say "family" but then he pretty much considers his friends a part of his family too.
9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
He's been married to England, Austria, Portugal, and almost with France.
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
In my headcannon, he’s with England. They’re not really married now, just dating.
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
I agree with a lot of people that his first crush was probably France. He was such a pretty little thing as a child. As for latest, his affections are firmly fixed on England.
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
I don’t think he really has an idea about this as for him, romance and love between two people just happens no matter how they are. However, he does appreciate loyalty and trust. Plus he loves pampering and taking care of others. I bet he would be very happy if his romantic partner allows themselves to be spoiled and cared for by him.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
His numerous colonies are his children. There’s a lot of them. He forgets who is who a lot of the time, but he loves them all. Nowadays, he always tries to relate to them as their doting Papa, but a lot of them resist his affections.
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
None at the moment.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
