That actually ended up being an accidental pun. I was trying to think of some smartass dismissal for Dean to deflect from his worry, and it was the first thing that popped in my head. After I went back and read it, and got the joke, I decided to leave it as a deflection of the kiss instead, cause it worked. Glad you liked it.
This is so, so good. I'm just stunned that this is only your fourth attempt at fanfiction. You told a fantastic tale here! The two POVs were terrific, in that we got Sam's 'surprise' at Ruby's tenderness, together with all of Dean's guilt and worry.
I especially loved the rhythm you found for Dean's POV. So many lyrical touches that still felt grounded and Dean-like. You should’ve been strapping giant Winchester babies into the back of a mini-van in California instead of having a psychic showdown in the middle of South Dakota. Just one of many. And I laughed aloud at Sam the angry octopus:-)
Sincerely, you hit everyone of my kinks and then some with the way you filled out my prompt, and I thank you heartily. Am Deliciousing this so that I can find it whenever I fancy a hurt/comfort wallow in snuggling boys..
Oh, I'm so glad you liked it. It really is only my fourth piece. I got introduced to SPN really late, (like during the break after 5.10) And had to catch up 4 and a half seasons in 6 weeks, but now I'm a full fledged fangirl, and hope to have many more stories to come.
The rotating POV just seemed necessary to me, to get both sides of the emotional turmoil, and Dean is really easy for me to write because according to my SPN-watching-buddy, I think just like him.
Sam the angry octopus spawned from my own memories of my mom drowning me in ice water when I was little and had a fever. The mental picture was too hilarious not to write, and I thought a little humor was called for.
I'm so glad this story satisfied your desires for the prompt, and thank you so much for the lovely review.
I don't mind at all. I'm glad you enjoyed it, and feedback is the food of authors. It really is one of my first stories, I've done one oneshot, one drabble, and have two chapters of a planned longer story done.
This was fantastic - Dean's frustration and worry are just palpable, and the filling in of Sam's time with Ruby just feels so accurate, it may as well be canon - all woven very nicely together. Sam the giant octopus was a nice break of humor, and then Dean's memory of killing Ruby - so spot on - really very, very good - can't wait to read more of your stuff.
Wow, "may as well be cannon" is perhaps the highest praise I can think of, thank you so much. My SPN-watching-buddy laughed at me when he got to the memory of killing Ruby... he's a "Sam girl" and makes fun of me because every time I talk about the show, everything I say is colored with Dean's perspective. Hey, I can't help it that I think like Dean! Thank you so much for the praise, I'm really glad you liked it.
