Sweet Birthdays

You was relaxing on the couch in his quiet apartment with a mug of ginger tea, hoping to stave off a massive hangover in the morning. It had been a busy day, and the surprise party for his birthday had been fun, despite one certain person’s absence. He was startled when the doorbell rang, and checked his watch. There was only one person it could be. He smiled as he set the mug on the coffee table and went to answer the door, happy that his birthday hadn’t been totally forgotten.

“Hello, Gacchan,” he said smiling at the man leaning against the jamb, “come on in.”

Gackt straightened up. “Hi, Youkun, sorry I missed the party.”

You shrugged and walked back to the couch. “I really didn’t expect you.”

“I come bearing gifts. As an apology.” Gackt followed You into the living room and set a bag from Mr. Donut on the coffee table.

“Mr. Donut is always an appropriate gift. Thanks, Gacchan,” You grinned. He picked up the bag and started for the kitchen. “Let me go make some more tea.”

Gackt followed and wrapped his arms around You’s waist from behind. “Happy birthday, You,” he whispered, kissing his neck just under his ear.

You shivered. The effect Gackt had on him never changed; never grew old. He smiled as he busied himself with the kettle and the tea.

Gackt pulled a plate from a cabinet and napkins from a drawer, and opened the bag. He set two heart-shaped doughnuts covered in powdered sugar and filled with raspberry jelly on the plate, and carried it to the small table that sat in front of the windows that looked out over the still-twinkling lights of the city.

You’s phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out and read the message, chuckling to himself.

“It’s Taku,” he explained as he picked up two mugs and came to sit across from Gackt at the table, “warning me that you’re on your way.”

“Takumi,” Gackt grumbled in fun, “always five minutes late for everything.”

“But he still manages to keep you on time. Usually,” You teased as he took a doughnut.

“I’m always on time,” Gackt grumbled under his breath. He reached for the last doughnut. “It’s the rest of the world that’s wrong.”

As the kettle stopped boiling You got up to pour the water into the teapot. He silently picked up his phone and snuck a pic of Gackt who had sugar on his nose and a dab of jelly on his chin. Then he slid the phone back into his pocket. He brought the pot to the table and poured tea for Gackt and himself.

Gackt smiled at him. He always loved these quiet, private times with You. ’This is what a real life would be like,’ he thought. Then he said light-heartedly, “You know, if that pic you just took gets out, you’ll be looking for a new phone and a new job.”

You looked like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar. He pulled his phone from his pocket, clicked onto his photos, and took one last look at the pic he’d just taken, his finger hovering over ‘delete’.

Gackt grabbed his wrist. “No don’t,” he said smiling softly into You’s eyes. “Keep it. My private birthday present to you.”
