Carol's Resignation from Black Rose Notice

July 11, 2006

TO: The Black Rose Board of Directors

FROM: Carol

SUBJECT: Resigning from Current Black Rose Positions (Director of the Greeters Program and Event Deputy Chair)

Due to increased professional responsibilities, family obligations, and a recent family tragedy, I have been reminded how short and precious life is. Along with that, the increasingly unreasonable restrictions being put upon me during my time as one of the Event Deputy Chairs, the lack of communication and sharing of needed and requested information concerning the event, and in some cases being treated with downright disrespect and a lack of professionalism combined with verbal intimidation tactics, make it impossible for me to complete my duties for the annual event. The position I accepted and the responsibilities described to me by some of the previous board members -- even though different from the original position advertised -- lack any resemblance whatsoever to the duties and direction actually given to me by the lead person for the event, when there has even been any direction at all.

After much thought, I have made the decision to immediately resign as one of the Event Deputy Chairs. I am sure with the remaining time before the event and given those that desire the position of chair, even from the current board members, a replacement will be quickly found.

In addition to ending my position as deputy chair, I will also be stepping down from my position as Director of the Greeters Program. There are a few individuals that have recently shown interest in taking over this program and any of them will do a fine job.

Over the last year I have realized that I do not agree with the direction the organization has been going in and it appears that some of the decisions being made by a few people in leadership positions appear to be made to advance personal objectives rather than what is best for the organization or its members. In addition to this, I was highly offended by the outlandish and unfounded accusations made against me and my character by a board member who clearly did not have the good sense to gather the facts first. Unfortunately, some of the “leaders” running this organization appear to have no idea how valuable the volunteers are, nor how to address them or show true appreciation for their hard work. Therefore July 31, 2006 will be my last day in this position. That should be sufficient time to update and train a new person.

To close my event responsibilities, I will gather all pertinent event information and get it to the Lead and Deputy Chairs. Any vending information will be forwarded to the vending staff as well.

All information pertaining to the Greeters Program will also be handed over to the new director and/or board prior to my departure date.

I am requesting that my BR email address continue to be active while I complete all final arrangements so that important event and organizational information isn’t forever lost as occurred previously when the dreadful and irresponsible decision was made to remove long-time volunteers from the BR server without allowing them the opportunity to backup their information and/or pass it on. I am also requesting that I remain on the organization’s staff list until July 31, 2006 as Director of the Greeters Program and on the event staff list until July 16, 2006.

Individuals will always come and go from this organization. It is a normal transaction as people grow and learn, and as their lives change. However, over the last year BR has seen a number of involved, experienced, and knowledgeable volunteers walk away from the organization. This is the largest number of long-term volunteers that I have seen leave over such a short period of time since coming to my first meeting over four years ago. At some point, even the most pessimistic, self-involved person has to wake up and wonder why. Nothing in the world can make someone stay if they truly are ready to go but you would think someone would make an effort to understand the reason behind this exodus and possibly work on positive changes to prevent this.

Black Rose is a wonderful organization and I hope it shall be around for many years to come. May the current leadership and Event Chairs open their minds and eyes wide to make the appropriate decisions so this will occur and that BR has a successful return to their annual event.

To those that have volunteered for the Greeters Program, the organization, and/or annual event, as you move forward with your duties and hard work, remember, life has to be fun too. And thank you for all you have done and will be doing.

Sincerely,

Carol
