Isn't it just a little bit ironic that Vince Vaughn is in Mr. and Mrs?
Just finished watching Freedom Writers. If you haven't seen it, rent it. I cried and cried. It was that good. It's amazing to me how people's lives can be. How much we really never change. The teacher [Erin Gruwell] drew

As a formerly poor person who was then and is still now for tax breaks for the wealthy [as well as for the middle class and the poor] and who was then and is still now for cutting federal social programs designed to benefit the poor perhaps I can shed some light on this issue. I believe that it is the responsibility of local and state governments, individuals, and private churches/charities to take care of their own. The federal govt. was not set up to do charity and it does a piss poor job of it. That is why I support cutting federal social programs- not enough oversight, inefficient use of money, and they plain don't work. I support tax cuts for everyone because the federal govt does not NEED as much money as it is taking in. I support tax cuts for the wealthy to bring them back to the same overall % of their income taxed as everyone else. I don't believe that wealthy people are obligated to give a greater percentage of their income to the govt just because they make more- i think that's patently unfair and unconstitutional. I believe in free will- tax everyone at the same flat % and if wealthy people want to give more, they are welcome to, but not required. They don't "owe" society as a penalty for being rich. They only need to make sure they are right with God in their stewardship and that is none of the govt's business; that is between them and God.a
Also, as a woman who is mostly opposed to the ERA perhaps I can shed some insight into that as well. I don't believe anyone has a constitutional right to a job or a house (unless they've already bought the house, then its their property). I believe if so and so wants to be a sexist idiot (or racist idiot) the people should respond by not supporting so and so's business. Bankrupt him by refusing to support his injustice. Don't run to the federal govt to make him play nice nice. Free will and free association are important. I also have no problem with the fact that women earn on average less than men. I've read the studies that account for the differences. Women on average also take more sick time and vacation, work less hours during the week, more frequently change jobs or drop out of the workforce altogether. Women on average are therefore less reliable and worth less to the capitalistic market. In addition the average woman is less skilled in negotiation than the average man so her pay suffers from that as well. Not ALL women are like that and it can be hard for an individual woman who is not like that to rise above the stereotypes and get rewarded with better pay but that blame would need to be put on the rest of the women affecting the average and not employers. Of course i don't know that there needs to be anger and blame. The reason most women take more vaca and sick time and family time and work less hours in lieu of better pay is because they prefer to. most women if given the choice between working longer hours on average and taking less time off or making bigger bucks choose the leisure time. You can't get around that.
In short, the role of the federal govt i believe is to keep the minimum laws in place needed to uphold the constitution and protect the constitutional rights of all americans and then to GET OUT OF THE WAY so that everyday people can live their lives as they see fit, free of federal govt intervention. freedom!
