Karla poked her head into Hinata's alcove, startled and concerned. "Hinata?!" she called. "Is everything okay? I thought I heard a yell--?"

Hinata wasn't going to stop blushing any time soon, no, and Karla's obvious concern just made it worse.

She waved one hand helplessly. "There was a... situation," Hinata managed. "No one is hurt."

Except, perhaps, Warren's pride.

"A situation?" Karla demanded. "You sure you're okay then?"

Sorry, Hinata. Karla'd had a stressful couple of weeks. She was a little uptight.

"I am--embarrassed," she said slowly, smiling at the other girl reassuringly. "But unharmed, I promise. Warren just..."

She reddened.

"He was a bird," Hinata explained. "And then he..."

Well. Hadn't been?

"Wasn't," Karla supplied, relaxing a bit. Her concern gave way to humor; she'd been on the island long enough to understand what that meant. "So now I have to ask--so was that a feminine screech of surprise I heard, or a manly yelp of dismay?"

Pink pink piiink! She couldn't help going pink.

"A bit of both," she confessed. "Neither of us had expected it."

Karla wasn't about to help with the pink, either. Sorry, Hinata. She was about to make it exponentially worse.

"Actually," she drawled, grin bypassing mischievous and careening towards downright evil, "you can help me figure something out." She leaned in and whispered.

"So, back home there's a rumor about Eyriens and I kind of wondered if it holds here as well. Is it true that the wingspan is directly proportional to certain parts of the...anatomy?" She bit her lip, trying not to laugh. "Inquiring minds want to know."

Hinata blinked.

...

...

And then she flailed, half laughing half traumatized and all embarrassed. "I w-wouldn't--you... you... Karla!"

Kaela broke down laughed, leaning against the wall of the alcove. "Worth it to see your expression!" she crowed.

"Karla!" Hinata protested, burying her face in her hands. "You are cruel!"

But she was still partly laughing even as her face flamed. Karla shouldn't take her too seriously there.

"I'm asking a purely academic question here, Hinata!" Karla protested, trying to look innocent. It almost certainly wasn't working, but the attempt was there. "Don't you want to contribute to science!"

Hinata gaped at her.

"How is an inquiry like th-that for science?"

"Anatomy and Physiology, of course," Karla breezed, totally not making that up on the fly. "Knowing the relative proportions of things is important for...understanding. Yes."

"I think," she said, gathering her tattered dignity around her like a cloak. "That you're making things up."

Also: still blushing. This was a normal state for Hinata.

"Hinata!" Karla adopted her most tragic expression. "Would I do that? Make up an elaborate ruse just to ask you embarrassing questions? I'm hurt. I may cry, you know. Brink of tears, that's me."

Honestly, it just felt good to just laugh and tease someone after the weekend. It felt very...light.

Hinata considered her for a moment before deciding Karla had to be joking.

(Hopefully.)

"If you wanted to ask embarrassing questions," she said innocently, "isn't it best to go right to the source of your curiosity?"
