“Mr. Schuester?” He was two steps outside of the choir room when he heard her coming. Excited pronouncement not agitated, thank goodness. Three, two, one… and Rachel appeared in front of him, planted her heels firmly, and set her hands in a way that would have been so very Legally Blonde if she hadn’t been so… legally not. “Since it is now December, and we only have two weeks before we have time off of school, I think it is very important that we…” He could predict her timing and mannerisms based on the way she called for him. That… was a terrifying thought.

Oh, she was still talking. “…it will help us maintain a sense of unity and togetherness that is so important to our club.” She looked up at him earnestly. “So… do we have your permission?”

Will blinked. For what? She’d mentioned Winter Break… maybe she wanted to schedule a practice for over the holidays? “Sure, Rachel,” he said, turning to walk into the choir room. “I think it’s a great idea.” Sometimes, it was easier- and less time-consuming- to pretend he knew what was going on than to admit that he hadn’t been listening.

She beamed at him as she followed him through the door. “Thanks, Mr. Schuester,” she said. Then she leaned up and kissed him on the cheek.

“Rachel,” he said warningly. “We discussed this. I don’t think-"

She shook her head at him, and then pointed up. Nervously, he glanced up… and saw the sprig of mistletoe hanging from the doorframe above them. “…what is that?” he said.

“Mistletoe,” she said patiently. “You know, from the decorations we put up during lunch.” At his blank look. “The non-denominational winter decorations that you just told me were a great idea?”

Will swallowed. Sometimes, it was better to swallow your pride and say three simple words: “I wasn’t listening.”

drabble, glee
