How I Met Your Mother - Thoughts on the Finale

Mar 31, 2014 22:09

Because the last thing I want to do is spoil stuff for anyone who hasn't seen the episode (or the final season yet), I'll put it all below a cut.

Let me preface this by saying that I started watching How I Met Your Mother during Season 2 and went back to watch Season 1 after the second season ended. I love this show; the characters are some of my absolute favorites and I love the way they told the story through flashbacks and flashwards.

At least I did until this final season. The fact that the entire season took place over a long weekend drove me nuts. And then to find out that three years do the road, Robin and Barney get divorced. Why the hell did they put us through all of this crap? I mean, ya, there were great moments (especially between Ted & Tracy formally known as the mother), but why have the final season centered around something that they're going to totally destroy within 25 minutes or so of the final episode?

And what the hell was that finale. That was complete bullshit. A finale is supposed to be everything you love about the series, this episode totally and completely destroyed everything. And the ending where the kids tell Ted that the only reason he told them about the story was so he could ask them for permission to date Robin. I'm sorry - what the fuck? The way they made it sound, is that even though Ted met Tracy and waited seven years (again, WHAT THE FUCK?) to marry her, he was still so in love with Robin the whole time he was married.

The fact that Ted and his wife waited so long to get married, just doesn't make any sense to me, at all. This whole series has been about meeting the mother of his kids and I think the wedding should have happened way earlier than it did, because the fact that it took seven years is totally not like Ted at all.

I guess the only thing I liked was the way they handled the passing of the mother. It was a theory that has been around since almost the beginning of the series. Then there was the episode a few weeks ago that basically cemented that that was what was going to happen. I kind of like that they didn't dwell on it for too long and that they didn't feature a funeral scene.

But the reason for Ted to be telling his kids this story being because he want permission to date Robin just doesn't sit well with me.

The whole final season and finale pretty much ruined the series for me to a certain extent.

I guess being a fan of Friends and the epic conclusion to that series makes me hard on the finales of other series, but a romantic comedy show (which How I Met Your Mother was) is supposed to make you feel good at the end and I just feel cheated.

Edit April 1

Someone made an alternate ending for the episode (fan made) and omg it is how the whole show should have ended! It gives me all the chills and squees that I wanted from the real finale.
