Summary: Kibum has always obeyed the orders of his surrogate father Jungmo, not knowing that Jungmo was planning to one day kill him.
There were so many people, more people than Kibum had ever seen in the castle. Counts and Duchesses and Barons and Madams who wore such elegant clothes that seemed to sparkle all on their own. Kibum felt like a fool with all the smiling he was doing. He just couldn't contain his excitement. It was just...a wondrous night.
I wonder if I'll see that grand sir here...Another laugh bubbled out and Kibum had to duck into a corner to get himself under control. Really, he had to be on his best behavior. King Jay was doing this as a kindness - he had to be thankful if he ever wanted such a gallantry to happen ever again. Kibum inhaled greatly and nodded to himself. Confidence renewed, he stepped back on the floor.
Out in the center of the room, before the terrace where many lovers - young and old -were dancing, was a long buffet table with many dishes Kibum had prepared himself. Kibum made his way over, eyeing especially the succulent watermelons. Watermelons weren't indigenous to the kingdom, but were brought in as a present the week before. Kibum hadn't gotten a taste then, but now couldn't hurt, right? He reached out and pulled a square chunk off the display and popped it in his mouth. It was sweet and juicy and crunchy...and sticky. Kibum licked his fingers cleaned, wiping at the corners of his mouth with his thumbs. He was aware of the elegant nobility around him staring and it did not feel comfortable in the least. When the juices were all in his mouth, he made a slow dash (through the grand crowd) back to his corner to gather up more courage.
“Your highness.” A page stopped him on the way. “His majesty wants a word with you.”
Kibum sighed. Well, either way, he would be removed from this massive crowd. He nodded his thanks and turned on his feet into the chest of another. “Oh, I'm so very sorry. Forgive me...Sir!”
“I see I was right - I would be seeing you again.” With his hat removed, Kibum could see the man's blond hair that fit so well with the man's bright personality. The bowed to each other in a mock formality with smiles on their faces. “Who are you here for, my good man? What house are you here with?”
Kibum furrowed his brow. “My own house, of course. The ball is in the palace, is it not?”
The man's face turned the same. “You live here - in the palace?” Kibum nodded. “Then...who do you serve?”
“Don't we all serve the King?”
The man laughed. “Well, yes, but I mean....not many servants are allowed into balls and even less few are dressed as...fine as you.”
Kibum looked at his clothes. They were a deep blue waistcoat over a pair of white breeches. They itched a lot less than his usual clothes and in fact seemed to glide over a lot easier as well. He had been overly happy when he found the present on his bed after his chores were finished. “Oh yes - they're a present from the King for my birthday.”
“Your birthday?” Kibum nodded. “Your birthday is today?” Kibum nodded, again. “Are you...Prince Kibum?” Kibum nodded for the third time - was this a strange concept? The man chuckled, running his fingers through the tips of his blond hair. “Well, well, well...I'm afraid I must have been much too forward this afternoon.” The man bowed low, with his hand to his heart. “I am Prince Hankyung of Mire.”
Prince...oh my... Kibum fingered his hair, hoping it lay flat. His knees strained as he stood as straight as he possibly could. He'd hate to look like a fool in front of a prince.
“Well...this is...embarrassing.” The stranger Hankyung played with his fingers, but never losing his smile, the one that had Kibum smiling too. He gestured out to the terrace. “Would his highness honor me with a dance?”
Kibum bit his bottom lip. Jay was wanting to talk to him, but...one dance? After all, Hankyung was a prince and he should do his best to please him, right? “The honor would be mine.” He reached a hand and this time, Hankyung escorted him out.
Kibum had never danced a day before in his life. He knew he had to place his hands in Hankyung's, but that was about it. Hankyung laughed, repositioning one hand on his shoulder as the opposite hand landed on Kibum's waist. He felt his cheeks burn up as they stepped closer together and fell into the dance. It was easy and honestly, it felt like they were floating up in the clouds. Their footsteps were light, carrying them up higher and higher and higher. Together, Hankyung and him spun and turned and danced freer than Kibum had ever felt before; it was as if the entire dance floor was theirs.
“Kibum!”
All at once they stopped and Kibum realized that it had been.
There was a giant circle of people around them, with disgust on their faces and whispering to each other. It made Kibum feel small, like a cock-a-roach, every way he looked. At the head, the people parted and King Jay glared down at him.
“Kibum, I sent for you 15 minutes ago.” Jay looked between the two of them. “What is this here?”
“This is Prince Hankyung of Mire, Milord.” The page from before informed. “They were...dancing.” A gasp rose up and Kibum felt his breath still in his throat. He stepped away from Hankuyung, trying to calm his flailing heart.
“Plenty of waiting maids and he chooses a prince.” Jay stepped closer, looking down his nose at Kibum, making him feel ever more insignificant. “Kibum, look me in the eye.” There was no way he could disobey, no matter how he wanted.
“Kibum, ten years you have been away - and I expected that today, you would show me your best behavior, the behavior you had learned. Instead, you act like a commoner. The food I could ignore - your dawdling I could forgive. But this shows me that you are not, nor will you ever be ready to lead this kingdom.” Jay turned behind him. “Guards!”
The armored men made a quick way to the scene, grasping on Kibum's arms lightly. “Remove the prince.” In a quick move, Jay turned to face the audience of baffled guests. “From here on, Prince Kibum is no more! The only service this boy will give to the kingdom will be as my servant!”
Kibum felt his body freeze, only understanding that he was moving through the passing scenery down to the servants' quarters. It had all seemed so perfect...how could he have ruined it?
Hearing the frivolities start up once more in the far distance, Kibum turned side and wept beside a red rose to sleep.
