Disclaimer: I own absolutely nothing. Super Junior belong to themselves and Al-A-Din and the Wonderful Lamp is a story from A Thousand and One Nights and Walt Disney.
Note: So, since this is the 'Princess' series, this story focuses more on 'Jasmine/The Princess' and...not so much the lamp.
Summary: Prince Hyukjae is at the age where his palace is a revolving door of suitors. Suddenly, a newcomer shakes things up.
A loud ringing jutted Hyukjae suddenly awake. He was suddenly cold - had the servants not yet come in to stoke the fire? Where was the fire? Where was the palace? “What's going on?”
“Good Morning, Your Highness.” Hyukjae jumped. Behind him, he recognized the face of the palace guard Minho smiling down upon him. The smile set him on edge and Hyukjae grabbed his robe off the bedpost and pulled it tight about him as a sense of armour.
“Minho-sshi? What's going on?” Hyukjae searched for his husband conversing with Shi Yuan and hustled to his side. “Dong Hai, what's going on? Where's the palace? Where's...anything?” Dong Hai was gob-smacked, opening and closing his mouth to find an explanation.
“Your husband is a thief, Your Highness.” Minho chortled. “He stole for me, he stole from me, and then he stole you. And now, I steal from him.” A dingy old oil lamp sung in the man's hand and a great silver smoke spewed out.
So strange...it seemed to be forming into the shape of a person...it was! The upper half of a man settled beside the guard, his lower extremities shrouded inside the smoke. He'd seen this shape before in his mythology books. “A genie?” The stranger laughed and Hyukjae turned on Donghai. “A genie is behind you?”
Dong Hai pleaded with him. “Hyukjae...” He reached out a hand.
Hyukjae stepped away, eyes searching as the answers all came together in his mind. “It all makes sense now...the palace, the carpet, the chests...you wished for them all.” He looked up, disregarding the tears streaming down his cheeks. “The apple - it was you who threw the apple at the coachman, back in the village. And you...and you...you're just like them.”
“No, Hyukjae, I - ”
“You are!” Hyukjae screamed. “You married me for my status, just as I said you would. That is why you wouldn't tell me who you were - you're nothing but a rogue!”
“Not just any rogue!” Shi Yuan defended. “We come from a very proud line of rogues, Brother-in-law! You should be -”
“Hush, Shi Yuan.” Hyukjae sneered and Shi Yuan backed away, staring at the ground. Hyukjae turned his glare back to his brother, who still looked at him with those pleading eyes. “I asked honesty - equality. And you couldn't even give me that.” Hyukjae reached to the ring on his finger and he threw it at the dirt between Dong Hai's feet. He didn't stay to observe his hurt; he walked away.
“Wait, Hyukjae!” Hyukjae, although he hated it, stopped. Turning, a great fat man in brilliant green dress stood beside Dong Hai. One closer look and he shared the same face as the genie beside Minho. Another genie? He couldn't believe it.
Dong Hai gestured to Minho. “Minho! Your genie against mine - winner takes all; you in or out?” The gentle speak of a prince vanished: Dong Hai spoke plain and to the point with a crass twinge about his speech.
Minho laughed. “Are you sure about that, little boy?”
Dong Hai shrugged. “I've got nothing else to lose - but you do, starting with that dog mullet you call a face.”
The green genie covered Dong Hai's mouth in a survival tactic. “No - he has plenty to lose! Don't listen to him. He's a babbling fool right now. We'll just be on our way.” The genie tried to turn Dong Hai around, but Dong turned right round again and stood firm.
“You in or out, coward?”
Minho chuckled loudly. “Done!”
Suddenly, walls were being constructed about them. Hyukjae watched them, watching the arena being built.
Dong Hai and Shi Yuan backed away, with Dong Hai holding an arm out to protect Hyukjae. Dong Hai's eyes never left the green genie, and they all watched him squeeze into the form of a mouse.
Minho, at the other end, wished the smoke genie into a great cat. Hyukjae, though he was still upset, grimaced internally at the loss.
Dong Hai stared intently. As the cat grew closer, the mouse pulsed and tugged into a barking dog.
Back and forth, the genies transformed to their master's whims. From a cat into a lion, from a dog into an antelope, a lion into a hawk, an elephant to a lizard - back and forth, forth and back, with no real winner in sight.
While Dong Hai sat on edge, Minho grew more and more impatient. As the smoke genie turned from a chicken to a greater bird, he turned his attention to the undone Prince Hyukjae. Just the same, the genie turned from the match and dived for Hyukjae with talons open.
“Hyukjae!” Dong Hai grabbed him, pushing him into the ground with Hyukjae beneath him. The hawk screeched and clawed - but only ever grabbing at Dong Hae's robe. No harm came to Hyukjae at all.
“Kill him! Kill him now!” Minho yelled. The hawk screeched again. Dong Hai turned, just quick enough to watch the genie pick up the the green genie bug and want to eat it.
“Enough!” Dong Hai yelled. The genies erupted in smoke, appearing by the sides of their masters (where Minho smiled triumphantly.) “You cheated!”
“There are no rules, streetrat!”
Dong Hai crossed the space, picking Minho up by the collar and shaking him. “You dirty liar! You cheat! You scum of the earth!”
“Scum?” Minho pushed Dong Hai to the dirt, giving him a good kick to the ribs to keep him in place. “I won fair and square, my boy. It's not my fault you took your eyes off the genie for your peacock prince - ”
“Peacock!?”
“Now that I have both the genie - in addition to my own power - I am the greatest sorcerer in the world.” Minho laughed, his body shaking. The arena fell and Hyukja thought that only made Minho's laugh grow louder.
“Actually, Minho...” Dong Hai's voice was louder. He raised himself on one knee, then two legs, smiling proudly. In his hand, the lamp dangled, shining in the rising sunlight.
Minho abruptly stopped laughing. He furiously checked his pockets (Hyukjae stifled a laugh behind his fist - Minho's face grew angrier and angrier with every pat.) He looked up with murder in his eyes. Dong Hai bowed - he was a thief, after all. “Why you little chit of a boy. I'll - ”
“Genie, I wish Minho was gone.”
In a puff of smoke, Minho vanished. For a moment, Hyukjae, Shi Yuan, Dong Hai, and the genies stood in the empty crop field in silence, as if the stillness would confirm what had just transpired.
Hyukjae took the first step, crossing till he stood before Dong Hai. The smile died away and Dong Hai stared down at his feet, fingering the lamp, embarrassed. The silence stretched out for a bit longer.
“What'd I'd expect, from a rogue.”
Dong Hai chuckled bitterly. He scrubbed his foot in the dirt and Hyukjae could see him biting over his lip. “I guess...you'll return to your father then, of course? And the marriage will be annulled.”
“No.” Hyukjae grasped his hand, not too far from the metal. Dong Hai raised his head. “You are my husband and I am yours - that is said and done and there is no going back to change that. Whether you are a rogue or a prince, you are my husband.”
“But your father - ”
“ - Is the king. And he had ruled that though anyone may court me, I decide who I marry.” Hyukjae stepped closer and pressed his lips against the stunned ones of Dong Hai's. He smiled softly, enjoying the pink glow on the other's cheeks. “And I choose you, Dong Hai.”
A beat and Dong Hai was smiling from ear to ear. Hyukjae felt arms wap about his waist and he melded into his husband's warmth, sighing contendly. “Call Me Donghae.”
The palace grew about them and they were once again enshrouded by the walls of their bedroom. However, contrast from the walls of his childhood bedroom, these walls were warm and free. Loving, Hyukjae thought as Dong Hai - Donghae - touched him shifting his face up to seal his trembling lips. Those feels stretched out his bones till it hit his heart. Hyukjae had felt trapped - after meeting Donghae, he was still trapped.
But he was happy to not escape.
