By the time the rain started, night had fallen. The steaks were long gone, and the team was relaxing on the beach chairs. Chin and Kono decided to head home, but Danny and Steve just moved into the living room so Danny could finish his beer. "What's up with the box?" Steve asked.
Danny tried to look innocent. "What box?"
Steve rolled his eyes. "Danny, I may not be a 'trained police detective' like some people, but that doesn’t mean I'm stupid. When I see a box on my coffee table that wasn't there this afternoon, and it has your name and address on the mailing label, I figure you had something to do with it."
Danny picked at the label on his beer bottle. "Well, when I got about half-way through the book we were reading, I found another note from my sister. She wrote that I should let her know if I enjoyed the story because there was a whole series. I liked it, and you seemed to like it, so I called and asked her to send us the next book. I didn't tell you because I wanted it to be a surprise. It just arrived yesterday. I thought you'd have more time to read now, so I'll let you have it first if you want it. If not, I'll take it back; I enjoyed the one we just finished."
Steve thought that Danny was trying too hard to sound casual. The New Jersey native was very carefully focusing on the beer bottle rather than looking at his partner, but Steve knew tones like Danny knew faces. Danny was nervous for some reason. The SEAL opened his mouth to say something to reassure his partner, but what came out was, "Well, if you read it to me, we won't have to worry about who gets it first." Steve winced internally. That wasn't what he'd planned to say, more like what he'd wanted to say and knew he shouldn't.
Danny looked at him in surprise. "Are you sure?"
"Yeah. I've, um, I've gotten used to you reading to me." Steve rubbed the back of his neck and hoped he wasn't blushing as much as it felt like he was. Of course, he couldn't help noticing that Danny's face was a little flushed as well.
Danny grinned. "Ok, babe. Head on upstairs. I'll make sure everything's locked up here and be there in a minute."
