Danny wandered around his apartment at loose ends the next night. He had called Steve after work and gotten rebuffed again. Steve was sharper this time, telling Danny to do whatever it was that he did when he wasn't fussing over his partner. The problem was that Danny didn't know what he did without Steve any more. Even before the man was injured, they spent most of their time off together, talking about cases or sports, sitting on Steve's lanai or his couch with a couple of beers, even driving around with Steve trying to convince Danny that Hawaii wasn't a terrible place to live. Not that Danny really thought that any more -- Hawaii was great, as long as he was with Grace or Steve -- but he enjoyed his friend's attempts to show him the wonders of the islands.

Danny tried to find something to keep him busy, to keep his mind off of his partner. The case they had been working on was almost done -- tomorrow would just be spent filling out paperwork and making sure they hadn't missed any details. He didn't have any laundry since he'd been doing it at Steve's house, and most of his clothes were still there anyway. Everything on TV was painfully stupid, and it was no fun to rant about it without someone else there.

The fact was that he missed Steve. Danny enjoyed their time together, and his feelings for the other man were growing steadily. That was probably a sign of impending insanity, but the last few months had convinced him that sanity was overrated. Danny told himself that their friendship was enough though; he wouldn't try for more. Steve could never be interested in Danny as more than a work partner, could he?
