I liked the lower key sensibility here - often series with kink try and go higher and more intense with every story (I'm prone to that) but a little break now and then really works.

It's an interesting choice to have them start a fairly intense D/s relationship before they know each other, because they really don't know each other yet, despite the intimacy of their relationship. We have some ideas of why Jack is there and what emotional needs it satisfys but Ianto - partly due to his role and partly due to his personality as presented here - is still fairly opaque in his emotional motivations. Is he doing this for any reason beyond being good at his job? Or liking the way Jack can sub? Is there a spesific emotional need - as an individual, as opposed to a charismatic sub - Jack can fill for Ianto? Is Jack interested in Ianto as an individual or only as a dom who can do what he needs? It's really interesting to me to watch the stories unfold and see what the answers might be.

More simply, public D/s is very hot. :)

Well, I felt like I couldn't really in all conscience raise the stakes from Burning Cigarettes, you know? And the point was, mostly, for Ianto to get Jack into a headspace where he didn't need actual torture in order to talk.

I need to explore Ianto more. I suspect on the surface his motivations are "he's incredibly hot and so pretty on his knees" but this is Ianto, after all, and I think he saw something damaged in Jack that he knew he could fix. Ianto's a fixer, especially if he didn't even get the chance to fix Lisa in this 'verse.

But all that is going to come a bit later, I think; next story, which will be easier, is mostly about what happens when people like them meet outside of the club...

Well, there's always someplace to go but whether it's worthwhile or not is a question. Besides, I think you're really pursuing an interesting aspect here; that Jack has lost the knack for giving it up because he wants to/it's fun instead of being driving to it by desperation. Ianto was right in that he doesn't know how to play (anymore). Yielding without being forced also implies a level of trust in Ianto, partly the secrets thing (kind of boggles me, that Jack would do this with a stranger - he has to have researched the club and Ianto, then again he may be holding retcon in reserve if he feels too threatened), partly just the willing vulnerability

Yes, sorry, I was a little incoherent there :) What I meant was, I didn't think elevating it from the burning cigarette would really do the story any good from a standpoint of "I don't want Ianto torturing Jack for information" -- I think there would come a point where Jack would stop talking out of sheer bullheadedness, as it's certainly not the first time he's been tortured. For Jack, tying it up with sex is a way to break a barrier that he's conscious of but can't do anything about. He's used to torture and to lying to his lovers but he's not used to his lovers explicitly pushing him to the truth at his request

Yeah, I didn't mean that there was any real risk of gossip from the club, rather that the level of paranoia Jack lives with is probably much higher than anything that happens at teh club
