Driving Home for Christmas (in three sleeps)

Dec 06, 2007 00:02

I have a room that needs tidying, a whole host of things that I need to pack before Friday and Voice work due in tomorrow and what do I do? Write Fanfiction of course. And it's not even for the Winter Wonderland Advent at
metamorfic_moon. No I instead write a drabble based on prompts from the last challenge at
metamorfic_moon, and that doesn't even feature Remus! My brain acts funny under pressure.

So anyway, here be the fruits of my labour.

Title: Pepper Imps
Rating & Warnings: PG for one instance of mild swearing (and I mean mild)
Prompts: Imps
Word Count: 217
Summary: Tonks reminisces over a lost loved one.

Pepper Imps had always been his favourite. He used to slip her one during an Order meeting, a twinkle in his eye as they sucked on the “hot little buggars” without drawing attention to themselves. He’d said, rather defensively that their flavour kept you awake, kept you alive. She just thought he had a rather strange addiction to them and liked there to be a ‘constantly vigilant’ reason behind it.

She stared into her open desk drawer and fought back a wave of tears, a small packet lay amongst scraps of parchment, old quills and case reports that had been due in weeks ago.
The miniature ice coloured mints glimmered up at her, their deceptively cool colour hiding their internal fire.

A cold exterior hiding a warm heart…

She closed the drawer.

Pepper Imps had always been his favourite. She remembered one Christmas when, checking the packet she’d bought him as a present for poison, he’d accidentally set the lot alight. He couldn’t look her in the eye when he told her what he’d done. She’d never seen him look sheepish before and was amused for hours afterwards.

His paranoia always had made her laugh…
With a wistful smile she selected another Imp and popped it in her mouth, the burn reminding Tonks of her late mentor.
