Recently in Musical Performance we have been learning 'Anyone can whistle' (hence the name of my journal) written by Stephen Sondheim. It is such a beautiful song and when John first sang it to us a couple of weeks ago, I found myself quite choked up.
Anyone can whistle, that's what they say - Easy.
Anyone can whistle any old day - Easy.
It's all so simple: Relax, let go, let fly.
So someone tell me why can't I?
I can dance a tango, I can read Greek - Easy.
I can slay a dragon any old week - Easy.
What's hard is simple. What's natural comes hard.
Maybe you could show me how to let go, lower my guard, learn to be free.
Maybe if you whistle, whistle for me.
Anyway, we have our first assessment next week, where we have to sing the song as a solo. We have been told by John, on many occasions, that we must treat musical songs as a heightened speech, and therefore the test is to see whether we can sing well enough while still telling the story and convey - ing the characters thoughts and feelings.
On Monday we had to practice the song, infront of the class and receive feedback from John in order to prepare for our assessments. I was really dreading it. I'm not a bad singer( if I do say so myself ;) ), in fact I quite like singing as part of a group but I've never sang a solo before. So John called me up, and I was shaking so badly. I felt like I was going to be sick or faint or run away screaming from the room, leaving a Rachael sized hole in the wall. But, in the end I did it. *punches the air* And not only did I do it, I made three of my classmates cry 'cause I gave an 'honest performance'.
YEAH!!! *dances*
p.s I've just reread what I put and I sound like a real Luvvie Dahling! Urgh, n'er mind...Oh and another tidbit of cool info, my singing coach, John Quirk, has worked with John Barrowman!!! >_<
