Email Again

Oct 18, 2008 07:53

Alright, I am just done. I did everything I was supposed to in order to prevent Thunderbird from once again losing all my email (irretrievably, might I add--the import tools, etc. just didn't work): changed the stupid default account name, etc.

I open my computer today, and once again, all my email is gone. Again, some of the address book is still ( Read more... )

Thanks, Kate. It is an option. I've resisted using it thus far because it tends to be the one hackers configure viruses for; but, then again, if I'm losing this much email this regularly with the Thunderbird, it's not like it could really be that much worse. And, I've got good virus protection.

Thanks for letting me know you like it. It's probably on the top of my list to try now.

Also, I forgot to say in my first post, it's going to cost me about $60.00. Because Microsoft hasn't made enough money on me...

*sigh*

Gmail is a good server-side email program, and I appreciate the input. In theory, I have an account, but I never use it--I have too many internet things to check already; but, I know many people who really like it. Unfortunately, it presents the same issue for me as hotmail or yahoo: while I can still use my domain email to forward to gmail, all my replies or outgoing mail will be sent from a gmail address. It's confusing for clients, and is usually considered unprofessional. It also means less indirect advertising, because when people see something like Shawn@Thisdomain.com, they go look at Thisdomain.com, so they find out about my services.

I was checking out eudora, but it looks like they have no compatible version for Vista (why am I not surprised-thanks Microsoft).

Outlook Express is free with Windows, you wouldn't need to pay extra for that... I probably have some spare Outlook registration codes around, if you preferred that (every Pocket PC comes with one, and I've had like 5-6 of those over the years).

That said, you CAN send e-mail from gmail as your domain. In settings/accounts the very first option is "send mail as" -- and I use it frequently when I want to use my domain address. You should set it up as your "backup" option: have your server forward copies of your e-mails there and leave the originals for you to pick up as normal, set the option I noted so you can use it to send e-mails from your domain in a pinch even if another disaster happens.

I've used gmail as my backup and traffic cop for quite a while now (I use many custom rules to pick out messages from the accounts I forward copies over from and do specialized tasks with them, most notably to forward possibly-important messages to my phone).

Thanks, Puffer! Outlook came loaded on the computer, and for whatever reason it doesn't want to work with downloading express (have I mentioned I hate vista?). Would you mind letting me use one of the registration codes?

I'm definitely going to set up gmail as the backup, per your instructions. Thank you and Tarsa both for the suggestions! I appreciate the help. I have no idea why Thunderbird is such an issue for me (the import tools don't work, either, not sure if it's Vista or the Vaio that's the problem). All around, it's just more than I want to deal with. So, I really appreciate the help finding something else.
