Life and some unbelievable, crappy stress in it has meant no bentos for a while. It was nice to finally get to pack one for the SO last night! It's leftovers, but it usually is!
You ate SHARK??? Shark, which is being pulled out of the oceans by the tens of millions every year to be put into shark fin soup? Which take 15-30 years, depending on species, to reach sexual maturity and only produce maybe a dozen offspring per animal, most of which die before adulthood? Which are being overfished far, far faster than they can recover? Nearly every species of which is under pressure thanks to the practices of long line fishermen using lines long enough to catch even the sharks that live in the deepest oceans? The fishing of which results in significant amounts of bycatch of threatened and endangered marine mammals, sea turtles, sea birds, and unwanted fish? Which is also VERY high in mercury thanks to its status as an apex predator, absorbing all the mercury its prey, and its prey's prey, has consumed? All of which makes it possibly the WORST choice of fish you could make from BOTH an environmental AND a human health standpoint?
Please, please tell me you checked the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch card, and bought either spiny dogfish caught in British Columbia (which is still high in mercury, btw), mako, or thresher, which are the only species of shark classified by them as "good" choices (all of the other 400+ species being classified under "Avoid").
