One of my LJ friends said this (Quoted directly from her livejournal):
"I feel, unlike a lot of the other students in my school, I was not and am not motivated to pursue a career in medicine to "help people". I can do a lot of other things and help people. I want to be a doctor because i love medicine, I love the science behind it, I love the intellectual stimulation, I love puzzles and challenges, I love to learn, I love that medicine is a field that requires you to continuously be learning. I find studying to be relaxing, I am a student who reads more than what is required, I do outside research, because i love medicine. I love medicine and all it's possibilities.
Not that I require for my friends to be medical students, but I find that I even get a long better with people who are interested in medicine. And do you know why that is? Because after I go home from school I want to have someone to talk about what I learned that day. I want to talk to people about medicine and research. I like it. It's fun and exciting for me. Artist hang out with artists, musicians hang out with musicians, and do you know why? Because they share a similar passion. "

slave2thescapel I just think it describes perfectly why I'm drawn to medicine as well - she wrote it so well that I felt I'd share her writing with the readers of my journal. I want to be in medicine, not primarily because I want to help people (although that is a really awesome added bonus), but because I am completely fascinated by how the human body works and how certain medical treatments/drugs & therapies can work along with the body (or compensate for it). If my primary goal was to help people, I could choose from any number of careers, for example social work. But don't social workers choose their career because they're interested in interacting with the people who NEED social workers? (I'm not well-versed on the duties of a social worker, so I'm just generalizing here). My point is everyone chooses a career they are interested in because of the work it requires. Virtually every career helps people - construction helps the community, teachers help children, etc. Anyway. The end.
