My mother is a tyrant. That is all there is to it.
I phoned my mother yesterday evening to tell her that I will be leaving Cincinnati after my exams on the sixth and I will be home that night opposed to coming home on the seventh. She is clearly content with this; my parents are openly glad to have me home for the summer. I then asked her permission if it would be okay if on the 10th of June I drove to Columbus to meet up with my friend Drew and then traveled with Drew to Wadsworth/Akron. She seemed, to my surprise, at ease with this. Things at this point were going swimmingly and I probably should have ended the conversation there knowing that my mother is as flippant as they come; she is somewhat of a loose cannon, if you will. Instead, I failed to use my better judgment and asked her if I could start working at Osterman's on the seventh. (My mother is the DM for Sterling Jewelers Dayton market and this summer I was to work in one of her stores that needed a little extra help). She said I should talk it over with Nicole since my original plan did not start my employment until the 11th of June. This is where things got messy.
"Taylor, what did Nicole say when you told her the days you could work?"
"Well, she read back to me the days I told her I was available- Sunday, Monday, and Thursday- and then asked, 'So no Fridays or Saturdays?' I told her that I would not be able to work Fridays an Saturdays to start but that it may change throughout the duration of the summer depending on what I work at American Eagle just because I would rather work more days there because I actually enjoy working there more."
"You know what, Taylor? I'll just tell her to find someone else to do it since you don't even like working there."
"Mom that's not what I sa.."
"No, Taylor, that's exactly what you just said. You know, you are driving 40 miles to Kenwood to work at American Eagle which is further than Fairfield."
"Mom, seriously, Kenwood is about 35-40 minutes from our house whereas Fairfield is about 30-35 minutes; not that big of a difference. I said that I like to work at American Eagle better because I know the people there, I like the people there, I get paid the exact same amount of money at both places and at American Eagle I can pretty much dress however I want to and I don't have to take out my piercing."
At some point during my explanation she hung up on me. I am opting to believe she hung up because she knows that I am right. Why on earth would I choose to spend more time in a stuffy, cut throat environment that I do not enjoy in clothes that are uncomfortable when I could drive an extra, at most, ten minutes to work in a relaxed, yet productive, environment in whatever garb I deem appropriate? Because the bulk of the legitimate friends that I have made this year reside in Cincinnati I will be able to hang out with them either before or after work; I will even be able to stay the night at their houses/apartments if I would like. What my mother doesn't seem to be able to understand is that American Eagle is able to offer me more hours this summer so it would seem proportionally logical that I make my availability at American Eagle a little more flexible than at Osterman's so is offering me about ten hours less per week. Perhaps I am biased. Perhaps my mother is biased. Whatever the case may be, it is my summer and I feel as though I have the right to spend it however I choose. I will probably try to seek out employment elsewhere as well if I really do not work for my mother. School is expensive and I was hoping to be able to pay for my housing next year.
The thing that honks me off more than anything is the fact that my mother, at the age of, well, I don't really know how old she is, but she is probably past 45, still hangs up on me. For Chrissake. Grow up, woman.
I need to brush my teeth.
