History:
From 1848 to 1853 Meri was part of the Oregon Territory. During this time she lived with Oregon and Idaho. This area was “found” by Europeans in 1775 by the Spanish first. After that the British and Americans came. Fur trades started up but that caused a few issues with European powers and the United States over territorial claims. 1805, The Lewis and Clack Expedition came to Washington. In 1836 Marcus Whitman and a bunch of other missionaries come to what will became Washington State. His settlement helped the Oregon Trail. He gave the natives medical care but when a lot of them started dying they blamed him and killed Marcus and fellow settlers in 1847, which caused the Cayuse war. The Oregon Territory spilt into two in 1853. The second one was the Washington Territory. In 1859 when Oregon became a state she got all of the old Oregon Territory. She was like this till 1889. Then she became the state of Washington after giving pieces to the Idaho Territory and the Nebraska Territory. Washington became the 42nd state in 1889. A bunch of hydroelectric dams were made along the Columbia River during the Great Depression. This included the Grand Coulee Dam, which is the largest in the U.S. When World War II came around we started focusing on war industries this included building heavy bombers and warships. Washington also played a major role in building atomic bombs. May 18, 1980 Mount St. Helens northeast face exploded it killed 57 people. Also the ash made it look like night.
